Ron DeSantis is Even Extra Insane Than Trump

Donald Trump, thankfully is out of office. And some may have hoped the the COVID situation would get better with him gone. Except it hasn’t gotten better at all.

Governors in red states had tried their best to emulate Trump by fighting any kind of COVID mitigation. And Ron DeSantis has fought harder than any others. This has resulted in Florida becoming the epicenter of COVID-19.

Howard Dean, once the governor of Vermont doesn’t much care for DeSantis. In fact, he says the Florida governor is even more insane that Donald Trump.

Dean made the comments during a Friday appearance on Ari Melber’s MSNBC show. He told the host:

Well, I am shocked by DeSantis. I never thought I would say this but I think he may be more of a lunatic than Trump ever was. Trump finally come around thinking the best thing he can do for his supporters is get them vaccinated. And DeSantis is completely out of touch with reality. I am not sure what he could possibly be thinking now when you got more than half the population that’s in school districts refusing to comply, long before the court said it was okay, more than half of the people in Florida’s school districts said no. We don’t care, shut up and go away. This guy is not – if you are the governor, you can’t do that.”

Image

Dean continued, “this guy is putting their children’s lives at risk. We’re going to have dead kids all over Florida in these districts that are following DeSantis. It is outrageous. I have never seen any governor of either party ever behave like this. It’s almost as if he doesn’t give a damn who has to die as long as he gets reelected.”

Biden says U.S. well being officers are contemplating Covid booster vaccinations after 5 months

President Joe Biden said U.S. regulators are considering giving Covid-19 booster vaccinations five months after completing the primary series and postponing the expected schedule for a third vaccination by about three months.

Biden, who spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett on Friday, said health officials are considering following this country’s example on boosters.

“We are considering the advice you have given that we should start earlier,” Biden said, adding that officials are discussing whether the schedule should be shorter. “It should only be five months and that is being discussed.”

Booster vaccination approval is expected to come sometime around Labor Day after federal health officials have time to review data from other countries.

The director of the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Francis Collins said last week that data released by Israel on the effectiveness of Covid-19 vaccines over time caused US health leaders to reconsider their position on vaccine booster vaccinations. Israel released new data on Aug. 16 showing a reduction in the effectiveness of Pfizer’s Covid vaccine against serious illness in people 65 and over who were fully vaccinated in January or February.

Israel released more data on Sunday showing that a booster dose offers four times as much protection from infection by the Delta variant than the previous two-dose therapy in people over 60, Reuters reported, citing data from the Israeli Ministry of Health. The booster dose was also five to six times more effective in preventing hospitalization or serious illness.

About 1.5 million Israeli residents have received a booster dose of a Covid-19 vaccine.

Later in the day, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki explained Biden’s comments, saying he would rely on CDC and FDA officials to make changes to formal U.S. health guidelines, which currently state that booster doses are given after eight months should be.

“So I want to be very clear. If they were to change their leadership based on data for a certain group, he would of course stick to it,” Psaki said at a press conference on Friday. “But for the folks at home watching, for all of you reporting this, nothing has changed about the eight month timeline in relation to the boosters.”

Other countries, including the Dominican Republic, Hungary and Germany, have either started, are about to, or are considering booster vaccinations.

Pfizer said Wednesday that a booster dose of its vaccine triple its neutralizing antibodies in an unpublished study as the company battles for FDA approval for its booster doses, according to Reuters.

The study also found that the side effects after a third dose are the same as after a second dose. Common side effects include headache, lethargy, mild pain at the injection site, and fever.

The distribution of the booster vaccinations is expected to begin on September 20 pending final approval from the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Biden government and vaccine manufacturers have indicated that there should be enough doses for any fully vaccinated adult aiming for a third dose.

Correction: This article has been updated to correct the timing of when a potential third dose of Covid could be administered. Five months after the full vaccination.

Former Theranos workers are nonetheless shaken because the trial of Elizabeth Holmes looms

Elizabeth Holmes, founder and former chief executive officer of Theranos, Center, leaves the U.S. Federal Court in San Jose, California on May 6, 2021.

He was the father of newborn twins who wanted to make a difference in the healthcare sector.

Now that Elizabeth Holmes’ criminal fraud trial begins Tuesday, Micah Nies is tired of “staying in silos” and breaks his silence.

Nies is one of four former Theranos employees interviewed by CNBC ahead of the Holmes trial. The others, who didn’t want their names to be used, say they are still afraid of retaliation from Holmes and former Theranos President Sunny Balwani.

“The fear is real,” said Nies. “Even several years later. The atmosphere was so poisoned that you heard the stories of people disappearing.

Holmes and Balwani have pleaded not guilty to dozens of wire fraud and conspiracy cases. The trial against Balwani will not take place until next year. Holmes and Balwani’s lawyers have not responded to requests for comment.

Nies joined Theranos in March 2015 for $ 185,000 per year as senior manager, customer service and call center operations at the company’s headquarters in Palo Alto, California, according to a letter of acceptance he delivered to CNBC. Theranos recruited him from another San Diego health company at the age of 41.

He reported directly to Balwani, whom he called the “king manipulator”. His job was to solve problems, but he said he soon realized that the real problem was Theranos himself.

Micah Nies, a former Theranos employee, with his twin sons.

“There was always something fishy or weird,” said Nies. “It was very clear that they were trying to hide something. I woke up every morning and wondered what they were doing today while I tried to figure out my exit strategy.”

Another employee who worked at Theranos quit after it became clear that the company was a “house of cards” and asked not to be named for fear that Holmes and Balwani might retaliate.

Given the upcoming trial, which has been repeatedly postponed, the former employee says she is “sad to witness such an epic failure of due diligence by so many people, but it is also very predictable”.

When asked what she would say to Holmes today, she said, “You are not dealing with someone who is acting in reality. So the meaning of a conversation decreases when someone just sees things as he sees the world would like to have.” . “

The former employees interviewed by CNBC all said they left the company disaffected and upset about what happened, but did not want to let this ordeal rule their careers. Each of them came to Theranos from different perspectives, but looking back, they say their views on what is going on in the company are crystal clear.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if either one of them became War of the Roses,” said Nies, referring to the 1989 film in which a couple struggles over a bad divorce. “He’s got more desperation in terms of money and she’s got a life to look forward to now that she’s trying to renew herself. The recipe is for a guilt game.”

Whether Holmes will take a stand in her own defense remains unknown. Former workers said damage control was routine at Theranos, and everyone agreed that Holmes is inherently optimistic.

“She was good at that,” said Nies. “We got bad news and the next day she was holding a town hall and everyone would glaze over. She’s very charismatic in the sense that she knows how to talk to people.”

And that charisma was featured publicly on CNBC’s “Mad Money” in 2015. The day after the Wall Street Journal published an explosive report that Theranos’ blood testing technology was not working as advertised, Holmes appeared on the air defending her company.

“That’s what happens when you’re working to change things,” Holmes told host Jim Cramer. “First they think you’re crazy, then they fight you, then you change the world.”

Nies, who left Theranos after just a year, stays in touch with some of his former colleagues. He says they “just want to put it in the rearview mirror. Hopefully they’ll find them guilty, Sunny too, and we’ll all just move on. But many of us are skeptical that that will happen since she is part of this elite group.” “

Another senior official, who asked not to be named because he might be asked to testify as a witness, said he felt, “It was taking a long time, we really hoped it would happen sooner. Most of us who worked there are “excited to see it over.”

And a former Theranos executive close to Holmes told CNBC, “It didn’t have to end like this. She could have taken any number of exits and changed the company’s career. Never take your foot off the accelerator. “

The long-awaited trial, which will be one of the most watched cases of financial fraud in recent history, arouses a rush of emotions in those who also believed they could make a difference.

“There’s definitely an unspoken connection between all of us, we’ve been through it together,” said Nies. “Those of us who left Theranos before it all collapsed, we’re on the other side with good careers now. It’s cathartic to talk about.”

Social media reacts to Kanye West including Da Child to the ‘Donda’ album

While many people have been calling for Da Baby to be canceled, Kanye West appears to be making calls to get the baby on the track “Jail.” Last night at Donda’s listening event, Kanye Da Baby’s Verse debuted at his third listening session at Chicago’s Soldier Stadium.

When people noticed that Jay Z’s verse that was played on ‘Donda’ at the last two listening sessions had been removed, the response was mixed.

A few people seemed impressed and actually liked Da Baby’s verse, but others weren’t here for everything.

One person tweeted, “Kanye added a dababy verse to his song after everyone tried to #Donda cancel it.” Another person asked: “KANYE HAD EXCLUDED JAY-Z FOR DABABY ??? # DONDA”

People who loved the Da Baby version said, “Okay, but why did Dababy spit more than Jay #DONDA.” Another, who seemed impressed, wrote, “Jesus, I’ve never heard a baby like this #donda.” Another person who seemed to share the same feelings said, “Dababy was wearing #Donda”

As you know, during the third part, Donda also set itself on fire. As if setting himself on fire wasn’t enough, Kanye also had a mock wedding with his estranged wife, Kim Kardashian. As you know, the two filed for divorce, but she escorted him on the set in a bespoke white Balenciaga dress, sparking rumors of a reconciliation between the two.

Kanye even had Marilyn Manson, Shenseea, and Da Baby at the Chicago event.

If you remember, the highly anticipated album was due to be released in July. So far, no official date of publication has been given.

Roommate, what do you think of that?

Eating places grapple with vaccine mandates in tight labor market

To mandate, or not to mandate?

That’s the question facing down restaurant owners and operators during one of the most challenging hiring environments in decades. The Food and Drug Administration approved Pfizer and BioNTech’s Covid-19 vaccine on Monday, opening the door for workplaces to opt to require workers to have the shot. But between enhanced unemployment benefits, hesitancy surrounding Covid, child-care hurdles and more, the industry is already facing a shortage of available workers and adding a vaccine mandate to the picture could cut both ways.

Big players in the industry have mostly remained silent on vaccine mandates for restaurant staff. McDonald’s recently pushed back its return-to-office date to Oct. 11 and said it will require its U.S. corporate workforce to be fully vaccinated by Sept. 27, with exemptions for religious or medical reasons permitted.

Chipotle CFO Jack Hartung told CNBC this week after the FDA’s approval that the company was looking to get feedback from employees and had not yet made a decision on mandating the shot, but was in “active talks” on the topic. The company has been encouraging employees to get the vaccine, Hartung said, adding he was hopeful the FDA approval might help those on the fence to take the step to get inoculated.

In New York City, restaurant workers need to have at least one dose of Covid vaccination under Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Key to NYC Pass program, which began this month and will be enforced on Sept. 13. Philippe Massoud, owner and chef at Ilili and Ilili Box, said that the mandate was not an issue for most of his staff. But he lost two, possibly three, workers who did not want to get vaccinated, and is short about 20 workers overall due to the labor crunch.

“Certainly, it’s exacerbating the situation,” he said of workers leaving over the mandate. “We hope they’ll change their mind down the line. … In addition to all that you’re dealing with the surge of the delta variant, which also creates its own complexity. So, we’re getting hit a bit from everywhere.”

In Austin, Texas, restaurateur Eric Silverstein owns The Peached Tortilla and Fat City, and said some 95% of his workforce is vaccinated. The company has encouraged vaccinations, paying workers $30 to get the shot and setting it up through its human resources department, but he stopped short of requiring workers to be vaccinated.

“We had such a high participation rate in voluntarily getting the vaccine, I did not feel we had to mandate it,” he said, adding that all workers are wearing masks at his restaurants indoors.

But for those who choose not to get the vaccine, there are consequences.

“If you do come down with Covid as a breakthrough case, even though you’re vaccinated, we pay you for your time off work so you don’t have to come in and get other people sick. However, if you are not vaccinated, we don’t offer that,” he said.

The labor crunch did not factor into his decision regarding the vaccine policy, Silverstein said.

But for some, it is hard to separate the labor issue from thinking about whether to mandate vaccinations for workers.

David Barr owns 44 franchise locations of KFC and Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop in Alabama and Georgia. While he has concerns over mandating from a legal standpoint as a small business owner, he’s also considering what such a requirement might mean for staffing.

“We’ve decided to encourage, versus mandate, vaccinations,” Barr said. “Both because of the tight labor force today — we don’t desire to lose potentially another 20 to 30% of our employees — and just from a policy standpoint of looking to D.C. or the statehouse as to what the policy should be regarding vaccines.”

US and allies warn of additional terrorist assaults because the deadline for withdrawing from Afghanistan attracts nearer

The US and its allies have warned that further terrorist attacks are likely in Kabul as the deadline for military withdrawal from Afghanistan draws nearer.

Two suicide bombers struck on Thursday near the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, where thousands of people are still hoping to be evacuated after the Taliban came to power.

The Pentagon confirmed Thursday evening that 13 U.S. soldiers were killed and 18 wounded. More than 100 Afghan civilians were also killed in the explosion.

ISIS-K, an Afghan-based branch of the terrorist group, has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The warnings came as the US and allies resumed evacuations from Kabul. About 12,500 people have been flown out of the country in the past 24 hours. Coalition forces have evacuated around 105,000 people in the past two weeks. Around 110,600 evacuations have been carried out since the end of July.

President Joe Biden previously said that ISIS-K was a growing threat to the airport, adding that the United States will be pulling its military out of Afghanistan by the end of the month as a result.

“I have repeatedly said that this mission is extraordinarily dangerous, and that is why I was so determined to limit the duration of this mission,” Biden said at the White House on Thursday.

“We will not be deterred by terrorists. We won’t let them stop our mission. We will continue the evacuation, “said Biden, adding,” America will not be intimidated. “

Addressing those responsible for the attack, the president said: “We will not forgive. We will not forget. We will hunt you down and make you pay.” He said he had ordered the Pentagon to “develop operational plans to meet ISIS-K assets, leadership and facilities”.

“We will respond with force and precision at our time, in the place we choose and at the moment of our choice,” Biden said, indicating that the US had clues about the ISIS leaders who ordered the attack.

Marine Corps General Kenneth McKenzie, commander of U.S. Central Command, said Thursday that ISIS will likely attempt to continue the attacks before the evacuations are complete.

“We believe that it is their desire to continue these attacks and we expect these attacks to continue,” the four-star general told Pentagon reporters, adding that the US has an “extremely active threat stream against the US Airfield “monitored.

McKenzie, who oversees US military operations in the area, said threats against Western forces and civilians at the airport ranged from gunshots to missiles to suicide bombings.

“So, at any time, there can be very, very real streams of threats that we would call tactical and imminent,” he said. McKenzie said he did not plan to call in additional US troops for the mission.

The US has approximately 5,400 military personnel helping with the evacuation effort in Kabul. Great Britain has the second largest military presence in Kabul with around 1,000 soldiers.

The UK Ministry of Defense said Thursday there were no reported casualties with the government and the military.

On Friday, UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said the threat of further attacks in the region increased as the deadline for Western troops to leave the country drew near.

“The threat will obviously increase the closer we get to our exit,” he told Sky News. “The narrative will always be that certain groups like IS want to claim when they leave the US that they have driven the US or the UK.”

Wallace also shot at the Biden administration, saying that the West “seems to think that it is fixing problems; it is not, it is managing them”. He added that nation-building support should be done “as an international force for the long term”.

Meanwhile, the UK approved the closure of its processing center at the Baron’s Hotel in Kabul and evacuated its officers. Wallace told BBC News that the last 1,000 eligible people at the airfield would be processed and flown out on Friday.

However, he admitted that not everyone can get out and told LBC radio that up to 150 UK nationals may not have made it yet as evacuation efforts are in their final hours.

Australia has suspended all evacuation flights from Afghanistan following the bombings, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced on Friday, claiming it is no longer safe to continue evacuation.

Cancun and Daytona may draw spring breakers and Waikiki, honeymooners, but which beaches worldwide are millionaire magnets?

Hong Kong-based consulting firm Nomad Capitalist released its latest annual index of the top sandy spots that appeal to high-net-worth investors looking to not necessarily vacation but actually put down roots — and some cash — in the world’s sunniest climes: the Nomad Beach Index for 2021.

The firm’s first such effort in two years — it took a Covid-related hiatus in 2020 — the index for this year features a top 10 ranking that includes 24 beach destinations around the globe.

More from Personal Finance:

Vaccine passports gain traction among travelers as delta variant surges

The firm graded beach destinations best suited for entrepreneurs, investors, stockbrokers and other high-net-worth individuals looking to invest, relocate and/or gain residency or citizenship. It aggregated data from more than 30 sources, ranking each on a scale from 1 to 50 to for beauty (30% of index ranking); services, taxes and immigration (20% each); and safety (10%). Thirty-six beaches were ranked in total.

The Cayman Islands tops this year’s list, thank to its status as a Caribbean tax haven for investors who do not wish to deal with the complicated tax laws of other countries, according to Nomad Capitalist.

The company helps “seven- and eight-figure entrepreneurs [and] investors who want to have a second home [or] have a Plan B citizenship or residence, or all the above, [or] reduce taxes in some cases, although there’s less of that this year,” said founder Andrew Henderson. “With the pandemic, people are eager just to have a second place where they can go.”

Nomad Beach Index 2021

The NBI aggregates data from 30-plus sources to assign destinations scores for beauty, which counts towards 30% of a ranking; services, taxes and immigration (20% each); and safety (10%). Here are the top 24 spots for 2021, ranked from 1 to 10 (including ties):

  1. Cayman Islands
  2. Antigua and Barbuda
  3. Bahamas; St. Kitts and Nevis (tie)
  4. Budva, Montenegro
  5. Algarve, Portugal; Vanuatu (tie)
  6. Crete, Greece; Mykonos, Greece; Cozumel, Mexico (tie)
  7. Langkawi, Malaysia; Santorini, Greece; Dominican Republic (tie)
  8. Dominica; St. Lucia; Mauritius; Ambergris Cay, Belize; Isla Colon, Panama (tie)
  9. Grenada
  10. Puerto Rico; Balearic Islands, Spain; Cebu, Philippines; Corn Islands, Nicaragua; Hvar, Croatia (tie)

Source: Nomad Capitalist

Other Caribbean nations such as Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, Dominica and St. Lucia — along with the neighboring Bahamas —also made the top 10. Proximity to the U.S. and a highly developed infrastructure and services sector factored in their rankings, according to Henderson.

“It’s also immigration [policy]; how easily can you get there?” he added. “You can go to Antigua [or] St. Kitts and obtain citizenship by investment in six or seven months.” (Actual processing times vary by nation.)

“Now you’re a citizen and you can live there as long as you want and enjoy the zero-tax policies,” Henderson. “I thought someone should take that into account along with which beach was the nicest.”

Investors residing abroad but retaining American citizenship, however, are still subject to U.S. taxes, so some — like Henderson — have turned in their blue passports to fully enjoy foreign tax regimes. But those who don’t wish to take that route can head for Puerto Rico, which came in at No. 10 along with spots in Croatia, the Philippines, Nicaragua and Spain.

“If you’re German or British, you can just leave the system, keep your passport and head down there,” he said. “For Americans, you’re looking at Puerto Rico to keep your passport and still have great tax benefits.”

Indeed, Puerto Rico is a convenient tax haven for U.S. citizens. Qualifying residents of the island are exempt, for example, from capital gains taxes.

Queen Naija provides an perception into her R&B hits

Roommates, some fans would take the opportunity to be a fly on the wall while their favorite artist cooks new music! On Thursday, Queen Naija gave her fans this chance through a series of posts on her Instagram story. The R&B singer shared screen captures of an audio clip that engages fans in her songwriting process.

The first clip posted can be heard of Queen playing around with her voice before giving a quick comment to someone else. The sound is not of the best quality, but Queen’s soothing voice comes through through her singing about cheating and her “good friend”.

“This literally raw footage of my songwriting process,” wrote Queen Naija in bold white letters. “I just keep looping a melody and inventing cadences.”

The audio recording presented is called “Pizza Hut” and has a running time of three minutes and forty-three seconds. It appears that it was taken on June 8th earlier this year to be precise.

In the second clip, Queen can still be heard singing the word “cheating” and the phrase “friend to me”. In some places the audio is inaudible, but it’s clearly all part of their songwriting process. Queen also teases fans with a “revisit” of the “little Pizza Hut clip” in more white text added to the Instagram story post.

In the third clip, Queen admits in a written text that she “doesn’t really make sense” but admits that she “loves the melody”. The explanation is consistent with what her voice gives in the clips! Towards the end of the Insider Preview, the volume increases a little, almost as if she is growing in excitement.

Her last comment is a poll asking fans if she should turn “Pizza Hut” into a song. She gave the fans the options “YESSS QUEEN” or “EHHH”.

Check out their process here:

Let Queen know in the comments if you’d like to hear more of this work in progress!

Kanye West Recreates Kim Kardashian Wedding ceremony at Donda Occasion

Kanye West‘s latest Donda listening event ended with quite the bang.

On Thursday, Aug. 26, fans joined the rapper at Chicago’s Soldier Field for the long-awaited album’s third listening party. Viewers of the event, which was mostly centered around a replica of the star’s childhood home, were stunned by the final song, when Kanye appeared to be set on fire and then was greeted by a bride with a veil-concealed face who many social media users were quick to assume was either his ex Kim Kardashian or a look-alike.

After the event, TMZ reported that the mysterious bride, who wore a Balenciaga Couture wedding gown, was indeed Kim herself and that she agreed to participate as a show of support, citing sources.

Among the family members reacting to the moment was Kylie Jenner, who shared images on her Instagram Story of Kanye and the bride. Meanwhile, Khloe Kardashian took to Twitter at the end of the night to post, “insanely beautiful!!!”

A screenshot of the stunning moment can be seen in the below tweet.

Video posted to a fan account appeared to show Kanye and the bride holding hands as they made their way out of the venue after the album had finished playing.

The night brought plenty of other shockers as well, with fans noting that contributions from both Jay-Z and Kid Cudi that had been heard during previous versions of the album were not included this time around.
