US troops arrive in Kabul to evacuate embassy employees as Taliban seize cities

US Marines have begun arriving in Kabul to ensure the evacuation of embassy personnel as the Taliban offensive sweeps through Afghanistan, the Pentagon said on Friday.

Just last day militants captured two of the country’s largest cities and appear to be trying to isolate Kabul before launching an offensive there, Defense Department spokesman John Kirby said.

In response to the deteriorating security situation, two battalions of Marines and one battalion of Army soldiers arrived in the capital on Friday to assist the State Department, Kirby told reporters at a Pentagon news conference in Washington.

The battalions are said to be stationed until the end of the weekend and to assist in the evacuation of several thousand people a day, both US citizens and Afghan nationals.

The State Department has now ordered employees in Kabul to destroy “sensitive material”, including items with embassy logos or the American flag.

A State Department spokesman told CNN that providing incineration containers for personnel to incinerate documents is “standard procedure” for “acceptance”.

Taliban militants captured Kandahar, the country’s second largest city, and Herat, the third largest city, NBC News reported Friday, citing a Taliban spokesman and local Afghan officials.

The insurgents have now captured at least half of Afghanistan’s 34 provincial capitals, taken control of about two-thirds of the country and surrounded Kabul, where the US embassy is preparing the evacuation of all diplomatic personnel except core personnel.

Kirby insisted that the US military was not surprised by the speed of the Taliban’s advance, but that it remained “concerned” about the pace of military gains.

He noted that the Afghan National Army, which is fighting the frontline against the Taliban, is better trained and equipped than the Taliban thanks to decades of US training and billions of dollars worth of American weapons.

The Afghan government’s security forces collapsed and many civilians fled their homes when the Taliban advanced surprisingly quickly into the country’s center of power.

But the White House said Friday morning that Biden stood by his decision to end the U.S. presence in Afghanistan after nearly two decades of fighting following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

“The president is firmly focused on how we can continue to conduct an orderly withdrawal and protect our men and women serving in Afghanistan,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement.

“You heard him earlier this week: he doesn’t regret his decision,” said Psaki.

In addition to the dispatch of three infantry battalions of the Marines and Army to Kabul, a US infantry brigade is on standby in Kuwait. Another 1,000-strong unit, consisting of Army and Air Force personnel, is being deployed to Qatar to help process special immigrant visas for Afghan nationals who supported US and NATO forces during the war.

Still, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said Thursday that the US still expects to completely withdraw all troops by the end of August.

The UK said Thursday it would dispatch around 600 soldiers to help its citizens leave Afghanistan, where around 4,000 British nationals are believed to be stationed. Canada is also sending special forces to the country to evacuate staff from the Canadian embassy in Kabul.

How the US navy needs to switch the legendary Humvee

The US military has a new ride.

His old workhorse, the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle – better known as the Humvee – shows its age. The Humvee was originally designed to carry troops on the battlefield in Europe against the Soviet Union. But during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Humvee was marginalized in favor of vehicles that could better withstand roadside bombs.

The Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, or JLTV for short, has now established itself as the new frontline tactical vehicle preferred by the US military.

“The JLTV family of vehicles is designed to restore payload and performance capabilities traded in by previous light tactical vehicles for added protection in recent conflicts – offering commanders an enhanced protected mobility solution and the first vehicle specifically designed for modern battlefield networks “Michael Sprang, the program manager for the JLTV program with the US Army, wrote in an email to CNBC.

The vehicle is manufactured by Oshkosh Defense.

“The JLTV combines the protection of the MRAP, which was so critical in Iraq and Afghanistan, with the agility of a Humvee,” said Rep. Mike Gallagher, R-Wisc., In an interview with CNBC. “I’ve ridden it. With the suspension system, you could have a cup of coffee, cross massive bumps, and not spill anything. It’s a critical upgrade priority for both the Army and the Marine Corps.”

Abbott deploys 2,500 out-of-state medical staff as youthful sufferers crowd hospitals

DALLAS — Hospitals in Texas are suspending elective procedures and turning to 2,500 medical workers from other states to help combat a surge in Covid cases as increasingly younger and healthier patients who didn’t get vaccinated against the virus crowd treatment floors.

The state is bracing for what could be its most aggressive fight against the coronavirus yet as the delta variant rips across the country and hits states with low vaccination rates and relaxed public health measures, particularly in the South and Midwest.

Covid cases in the Lone Star State have exploded in the last few weeks. Texas is averaging about 15,419 new cases per day, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University as of Wednesday, up 34% from a week ago and more than double the seven-day average of 6,762 just two weeks ago.

“What’s concerning about the trajectory is that we’re seeing a much more rapid increase in the number of cases,” said Dr. Trish Perl, chief of infectious diseases at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

“We are seeing unvaccinated people that are younger as opposed to earlier in the pandemic when we saw a lot of hospitalizations over 65. Now, the largest and the highest increases that we’re seeing are the 18-to-49-year-olds, and a lot of these people don’t have underlying illnesses.”

The surge in cases comes as Republican Gov. Greg Abbott wages war against local school and government officials who have reinstituted mask mandates, threatening $1,000 fines against municipalities and officials who defy him. He first banned local mask mandates in a May 18 executive order, then issued a second order July 29 levying fines against any county, city, school district, health agency, or government official who disobeys his directive.

The second order also prohibited all public and private entities, government agencies, from requiring individuals to get vaccinated or submit proof of vaccination.

Local officials across Texas are defying state leaders, turning to the courts to challenge Abbott.

A district court judge in Bexar County, home to San Antonio, issued a temporary restraining order Tuesday against Abbott’s ban on mask requirements, allowing local officials to reinstate the mandates and other emergency orders to combat the delta variant.

About 300 miles north, the Dallas Independent School District issued a temporary mask requirement on Monday for all district properties.

Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins followed that with a new mask mandate for schools, businesses and county buildings on Wednesday after a local judge gave him a temporary restraining order that restricts Abbott from enforcing his ban.

Abbott has vowed to fight the restraining orders. In a joint press release with State Attorney General Ken Paxton, the two said they are relying on personal responsibility and protecting “the rights and freedoms of all Texans.”

“Attention-grabbing judges and mayors have defied executive orders before, when the pandemic first started, and the courts ruled on our side – the law,” Paxton said in the statement. “I’m confident the outcomes to any suits will side with liberty and individual choice, not mandates and government overreach.”

Austin Mayor Steve Adler said he is weighing a citywide mask mandate if “the science, the data, and the doctors tell us that’s something that needs to happen in order to keep the community safe.”

“Local school districts ought to be able to make that decision themselves to provide the best protection for their children,” Adler said in an July 28 interview with CNBC.

“I haven’t heard any scientific or data-driven rationale for a policy that doesn’t allow masking to be enforced in order to protect the public health,” Adler said, adding that he is “strongly recommending that all children in schools wear masks, and that teachers and guests in the school do the same thing.”

Hospitalizations, meanwhile, keep climbing. The Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital in Houston and St. Luke’s Hospital in the nearby Woodlands have set up overflow tents outside to handle the influx of patients, a majority of whom are unvaccinated, according to local officials. Texas lags the U.S. in vaccinations with 53.6% of its total population receiving at least one shot, compared with 58.9% nationwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Abbott asked the Texas Hospital Association earlier this week to voluntarily postpone elective medical procedures to free up ICU beds and said the state was bringing in 2,500 out-of-state medical personnel to relieve exhausted doctors and nurses.

“This help could not come fast enough. Many hospitals have already idled non-essential services and are diverting patients to extend staffing capability,” Texas Hospital Association President Ted Shaw said in a statement Tuesday. “The hospital industry is losing frontline staff, particularly nurses, to burnout and illness; many have left the profession due to the extreme nature of the work during a relentless pandemic.”

More than 90% of all ICU beds in Texas were full with roughly 40% dedicated to Covid patients as of Wednesday, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

While cases and deaths across the nation are down from their January record highs, they are on the rise again — but at a much faster pace in Texas. The state’s death toll is also on the rise at a seven-day average of 57 daily Covid deaths as of Monday, up 36% from last week but below the record average of more than 341 deaths per day in late January 2021, according to Hopkins data.

“It’s honestly heartbreaking. There’s this feeling that they’re invisible but that’s not true, we are seeing critically ill individuals,” said Perl, of UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. She said vaccinations are the “absolute best defense.”

How Molly Ringwald impressed Joey King of The Kissing Sales space 3

Learn from the best.

The beloved Netflix trilogy The Kissing Booth has helped boost the careers of breakout leads Joey King, Jacob Elordi and Joel Courtney, while she herself provides mentoring from the OG “Queen of Rom-Coms”: Molly Ringwald.

The legendary Brat Pack star of the 80s was “the best” according to Courtney.

“She was just one of the most exciting people on set because she’s like the queen of the rom-coms back then,” Courtney told E! News about the collaboration with the Pretty in Pink alum. “Having her on set felt a bit like handing over the baton generation from Molly to Joey. It was such a fun experience to hear their stories, hear their talk, hear their wisdom, like their thought process, they work process actors , it was just so surreal. ”

Courtney and Ringwald are expected to team up again for the thriller “Pursued by The Kissing Booth 3”, which is now streamed on Netflix.

27 vaccinated folks examined optimistic for Covid on a Carnival cruise ship

According to the Belize Tourism Board, 27 people onboard a Carnival Vista cruise that docked in Belize on Wednesday tested positive for Covid-19.

Only one of the positive cases was a passenger and the remaining 26 were crew members. All 27 people have been vaccinated and have mild or no symptoms, the country’s tourism authority said.

Contact follow-up was conducted and no other positive cases were discovered.

On the ship, which sailed from Galveston, Texas, there are a total of 2,895 guests and 1,441 crew members, said the tourism association.

According to the Washington Post, Carnival announced last week that there were positive cases on board but did not disclose how many cases there were at the time.

“Carnival is managing a small number of positive COVID cases on Carnival Vista sailing out of Galveston. Even though our entire crew and almost all of our guests are vaccinated,” a Carnival Cruises spokesman said in a statement.

“We managed the situation using strict health protocols, which included isolating those who tested positive and close contacts in quarantine.”

As of Saturday, all guests, regardless of their vaccination status, must have a negative Covid test, Carnival said.

Carnival Cruises stocks fell more than 1% on Friday.

‘Free Man’ is the field workplace barometer Hollywood has been searching for

Jodie Comer and Ryan Reynolds star in 20th Century Studio’s “Free Guy.”

Disney

20th Century Studios’ “Free Guy” could be the barometer the movie theater industry has been looking for as the Covid delta variant spreads domestically.

After months of franchise films that released in theaters and on streaming platforms on the same day, along comes “Free Guy.” It will be released Friday exclusively in cinemas — a rarity during the pandemic.

The Disney film, which stars Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer, is also one of only a few original concept films to arrive on the big screen this year.

Box office analysts are eager to see how the action-comedy performs during its opening weekend, as it may be one of the purest tests of whether the movie theater industry is really seeing a comeback. Most of the high profile films that had a theatrical-only release — like Universal’s “F9” and Paramount’s “A Quiet Place Part II” — are part of established film franchises, giving them a ready-made fan base eager for a new installment.

Likewise, it’s been difficult with hybrid releases, like Warner Bros.’ “The Suicide Squad,” to determine if ticket sales were hurt because of the pandemic or because the film was available to stream at home.

“There are fewer variables,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, referring to “Free Guy.” “We can actually analyze things in an empirical way rather than the theoretical.”

With an exclusive theatrical release, the box office performance will be based on three things: Were people comfortable going to the theater? Were they interested in seeing “Free Guy?” Did the film get good word-of-mouth buzz during the weekend?

“Disney has held onto ‘Free Guy’ for quite a while now, as the company has high hopes it can break through the befuddled box office,” said Jeff Bock, senior analyst at Exhibitor Relations. “Truth is, in a normalized marketplace ‘Free Guy’ would have a clear path to success.”

Bock noted that film has likable stars in Comer and Reynolds, good reviews and positive word of mouth heading into its opening weekend.

“If ‘Free Guy’ doesn’t plug into $20 million or more this weekend, it could be a clear sign of more theatrical release chaos is on the horizon.”

Current estimates for the film range from $15 million to $20 million.

Disney’s decision to keep this film on the theatrical slate implies that the studio sees potential for a large-scale comedy to thrive even during the current climate, said Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at Boxoffice.com.

“This is the kind of film they could have easily dumped to a streaming service at any point over the past year, and it would have been a far less surprising move than some of the other films the studio pushed to the at-home realm,” he said.

New Covid cases are being diagnosed at a pace not seen since February. Blame has fallen on the highly contagious delta variant, which is spreading quickly among unvaccinated people and at times causing breakthrough infections among the vaccinated. The pace of the spread has raised concerns that consumer behavior will change, as people grow more cautious and state and local government reinstate precautions like mask mandates in indoor settings such as theaters.

On Aug. 20, San Francisco will require proof of vaccination for indoor activities including movie theaters. New York City plans to enforce proof of vaccination at indoor entertainment centers beginning Sept. 13, although some establishments plan to put the plan into effect on Monday.

Robbins said “Free Guy” has the advantage of a PG-13 rating, good buzz and a “core male audience that has been a driver of this year’s more positive box office performances.”

It also has Reynolds, who is not only the star but has handled much of the marketing in recent months. The “wild card,” Robbins said, is the fact that it is an original property and doesn’t have any built-in demand like films that are part of major franchises.

Sony has postponed its release of “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” opting for an October opening instead of late September. If “Free Guy” performs well over the weekend, studios may be more confident about sticking with the current schedule.

Southside’s mom’s son calls him on Instagram

As parents prepare to prepare their children for school again this year, this time of year seems to have become very stressful for some single mothers. Today is the second time a woman has called the father of her prominent child because he is financially unavailable in the life of her child.

As we reported earlier, Brittni Mealy called Future this week because she allegedly hadn’t helped her son and refused to give him money for school clothes.

Today Ashley, mother of super producer Southside’s son, shared a message asking him not to provide school supplies or clothing for her son, RJ.

On her Instagram story, she shared a long note that it was unfortunate that she had to share this information online and that more strangers were supporting her than her real family. In the note, the mother of two called Southside for bending over on Instagram but not sending a box of clothes and accessories to her child. She also shared that she has created a GoFundMe account with a goal of $ 2,500 to raise funds for her seven-year-old son and ten-year-old daughter.

In the description, Ashley described her struggle to be a single mother. She went on to explain that she is currently out of work due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is a full-time carer for her diabetic daughter. All of this made it difficult for her to hold bills and put food on the table.

Ashley also redoubled her claims that Southside refused to pay child support for RJ. She has called him in the past about the same thing.

At this point, Southside has not responded to the claims, but if they do we will keep you posted!

Stock futures inched higher on Friday as the S&P 500 seeks to end a winning week on a high note.

Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 50 points. S&P 500 futures added 0.1% and Nasdaq 100 futures were slightly in the green.

Shares of Disney jumped more than 5% in premarket trading after the media and theme park giant reported blowout fiscal third-quarter earnings, crushing Wall Street expectations on Disney+ subscriber growth and overall revenue and earnings.

The blue-chip Dow and the S&P 500 are on track to close out a winning week after gaining 0.8% and 0.6%, respectively, through Thursday. Both are at record highs. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite underperformed this week, down 0.1%.

Investors digested mixed economic data on Thursday. Weekly jobless claims came in at 375,000 last week, matching estimates and declining for a third straight week. Meanwhile, the producer price index, excluding volatile food, trade services and energy components, rose 0.9% last month versus a forecast for a 0.5% gain.

“The hot PPI/home price figures took some of the sheen off the Wed CPI-induced ‘inflation has peaked party’ and this spurred very modest profit taking in cyclical groups following two days of outperformance,” Adam Crisafulli, founder of Vital Knowledge, said in a note.

Stocks are rising to records on the back of a stellar earnings season. The year-over-year earnings growth is expected to be 92.9%, according to Refinitiv. So far about 90% of the S&P 500 companies have handed in their quarterly report, and about 88% of them beat earnings estimates from Wall Street analysts, according to Refinitiv.

Howard Dean Names The Florida Politician Who May Finish Ron DeSantis’ Profession

Ron DeSantis doesn’t seem to care much about what happens in Florida right now. The state is in crisis mode thanks to the Delta variant of COVID-19. But the state’s governor seems more interested in fighting culture wars than combating the virus.

One would think that DeSantis is doing so because he thinks that’s the best way to become the 2024 GOP candidate. But if things continue to get worse in Florida, and they will, DeSantis will have plenty of egg on his face.

During a recent interview with Ari Melber, Howard Dean said it won’t be long before Republicans start coming out against DeSantis. And if Marco Rubio is one of them, the former DNC chairman says, it could end the Florida’s governors chances.

Dean began, “He’s totally unfit to govern in any way, and he’s an embarrassment to every governor, I mean every governor, both Republicans and Democrats. A guy like this should never be in public authority. The good news here for the people of Florida is that people are beginning to stand up to this. In the last 24 hours, there are a number of large school districts that have ignored DeSantis’ crazy order. DeSantis is doing this to position himself to run for president with the MAGA people, but what he doesn’t realize and he’s a smart guy.”

The Democrat continued, “When Rubio starts objecting to DeSantis, you know he and his pollsters will have decided that DeSantis has become a liability.
