DETROIT — General Motors is offering buyouts for U.S. Buick dealers that don’t want to invest in the brand’s transition to offering domestic-only all-electric vehicles by 2030, the automaker confirmed on Friday.

The buyout offers, which will be outlined to Buick dealers Friday, are GM’s latest effort to accelerate the company’s electric vehicle plans and transform its dealership network.

All of Buick’s roughly 2,000 US franchised dealerships will be given an opportunity to complete a buyout, Duncan Aldred, Buick’s global head, told The Wall Street Journal.

“Not everyone necessarily wants to make this journey, depending on where they are or what the expenses the transition will require,” he told the publication. “So if they want to exit the Buick franchise, we will give them financial support to do so.”

Michelle Malcho, a company spokeswoman, confirmed the buyout plans to CNBC on Friday, but declined to disclose expected costs or how many dealers GM expects to take up the offer. Many Buick dealers also sell GMC vehicles or another US brand of GM.

The company offered similar buyouts to Cadillac dealers in 2020. About 320 of those 880 retailers accepted the offer, rather than anticipating investing at least $200,000 to modernize EV dealerships.

Buyout offers for Cadillac dealers have ranged from about $300,000 to more than $1 million, a person familiar with the plans previously told CNBC. Malcho declined to disclose how much Buick dealerships would be offering.

Buick’s EV plans are part of a broader $30 billion investment by GM in electric vehicles through 2025. That investment is expected to result in about 30 new electric vehicles worldwide from the automaker, which has committed to becoming an all-electric vehicle by 2035 .

Editor’s Note: This article has been updated to reflect the correct number of retailers accepting buyout offers from GM.

Biden turns the tables on Peter Doocy and shatters Fox/Trump misinformation

Peter Doocy asked Biden if he viewed Trump supporters as a threat to the nation, and Biden destroyed the conversation between Trump and Fox News.

Transcript provided to PoliticusUSA by the White House Pool Report:

Peter Doocy: Do you consider all Trump supporters a threat to the country?

POTUS: Come on folks… I don’t see any Trump supporter as a threat to the country. I think everyone who calls for the use of violence, fails to condemn violence when it is used, refuses to recognize an election won, insists on changing the way we govern and count votes , poses a threat to democracy. Democracy.

Everything we stand for, everything we stand for rests on the platform of democracy. The people voted for Donald Trump and are now supporting him, they didn’t vote for an attack on the Capitol. They did not vote to overrule an election. They voted for a philosophy he proposed. So all I am saying is that it is inappropriate – and this is happening not only here but in other parts of the world – not to recognize and condemn violence whenever it is used for these purposes. Failure to condemn an attempt to rig election results. Not recognizing when elections are won or lost.

The President made an important distinction between Trump, elected Republicans and the people who elect them. Biden was right. People didn’t vote for Donald Trump because they wanted the Capitol attacked or secret documents stolen. People didn’t vote for Donald Trump because they wanted democracy destroyed.

Tens of millions didn’t vote for Trump because they thought the election was “rigged.”

Ever since the story of the classified documents exposed Trump, Fox News, some elected Republicans, and the conservative media have all gone into overdrive to personalize Trump’s behavior as a threat to the Republican base.

The latest attempt is to claim that Biden believes Trump supporters are a threat to America. It’s not true, and Peter Doocy’s question gave the President an opportunity to strongly rebuke the misinformation being disseminated by the right.

Tiffany Haddish and Aries Spears sued for youngster molestation

Tiffany Hadish and Aries spears are accused of grooming and molesting two young siblings by forcing them to film explicit skits for a Funny or Die video. Still, Tiffany’s legal team calls the lawsuit nothing more than a “shakedown” and “extortion.”

The comedians are being sued by an unnamed brother and sister, identified as John Doe and Jane Doe, who were respectively seven and 14 years old at the time of the alleged incidents, according to a lawsuit obtained by TMZ.

The siblings claim they were traumatized for life following the reported grooming and sexual assaults, with the boy accusing both Haddish and Spears of abuse.

Lawsuit alleges siblings were groomed and molested by Haddish and Spears for ‘comedy skits’

The lawsuit says the older sister said Haddish gained her trust before convincing her to appear in a sexually suggestive video in which the comedienne taught the girl how to mimic fellatio.

TMZ reports that the younger brother was just 7 years old when Haddish took him to a house where she and Spears allegedly molested him while filming a “Funny or Die” video titled “Through a Pedophiles Eyes.”

Haddish’s attorney, Andrew Brettler, calls the lawsuit an extortion attempt that has been going on for some time, telling the outlet that “the plaintiff’s mother, Trizah Morris, attempted to put these false allegations against Ms Haddish to do several years.”

Haddish’s lawyer calls lawsuit ‘shakedown’ and racketeering, calls allegations ‘false, baseless’

Brettler went on to say that “every attorney who initially took her case … eventually dropped the matter when it became clear that the claims were unfounded.”

“Every solicitor who initially took her case – and there were several – eventually dropped the matter when it became clear the claims were unfounded and Ms Haddish would not be shaken. Now Ms. Morris has her adult daughter representing herself in this lawsuit. The two will bear the consequences of this frivolous action together.”

Meanwhile, Funny or Die has completely distanced itself from the situation, telling TMZ that “they were not involved in the making of the video.”

The site added that they found the video “absolutely disgusting” and “would never produce content like this.”

“’Funny Or Die’ found this video absolutely disgusting and would never produce such content. We were not involved in the conception, development, financing or production of this video. It was uploaded to the site as user-generated content and immediately removed in 2018 after learning of its existence.”

The siblings claim Haddish previously befriended their mother.

Siblings claim trauma resulting from abuse, both have developed social disorders, plaintiff states

The older sister states the resulting trauma has affected her dating life as “she is afraid of being taken advantage of” and “has taken a path of false trust like the path Haddish took her”.

Both brother and sister claim they developed social disorders following the abuse, with the boy allegedly being so paranoid about being watched or recorded that he puts band-aids over every camera he sees.

The siblings are demanding unspecified damages from the comedians.

The couple had said their mother previously tried to reach a $15,000 settlement with Spears over the alleged harassment video.

China’s e-commerce large Pinduoduo launches US purchasing web site Temu

Chinese e-commerce giant Pinduoduo is lagging behind its rivals Alibaba and JD.com in international expansion. Now Pinduoduo has launched a US e-commerce site called Temu.

Pinduoduo launched its US online shopping site, while the Chinese e-commerce giant makes its first big move overseas.

The website, dubbed Temu, which went live Thursday, lists items in a range of categories including clothing, jewelry, pet supplies and home and garden, and could pose a new challenge for US e-commerce leader Amazon.

Pinduoduo did not respond to a request for comment when contacted by CNBC.

Temu marks Pinduoduo’s biggest overseas push yet as China’s domestic economy faces a host of challenges, from a Covid-19 resurgence to an energy crisis. This has hurt China’s economic growth and dampened consumer sentiment.

China’s biggest tech companies from Tencent to Pinduoduo’s e-commerce rivals Alibaba and JD.com continue to pursue international markets. Pinduoduo, a much younger company than Alibaba and JD.com, having only been founded in 2015, is lagging behind its peers when it comes to foraying overseas.

Alibaba took a majority stake in Singapore-based Southeast Asian e-commerce site Lazada in 2016 and has since invested money in the company to expand its presence in the region. Alibaba also has a separate website called AliExpress that serves markets like Europe and the US

JD.com now operates Joybuy.com for international customers.

Pinduoduo’s Temu is a cross-border e-commerce site where most of the products are likely to come from overseas, especially China. Temu said that shipping to the US could take 7-15 business days.

“It is important to keep in mind that you may experience longer delivery times than you are used to from other ecommerce sites. This is due to the fact that items may come from another country or need to be bundled or boxed with other similarly sized items,” the site’s shipping information page reads.

Shipping is free on orders over $49.

Pinduoduo might face some challenges when it comes to breaking into the US market. First, it needs to build the brand’s reputation with companies like Amazon. And it could also suffer from its relatively long shipping times compared to the same-day or next-day deliveries that Amazon offers through its Prime subscription services.

Temus “Key challenges will be building trust and awareness among customers,” Jacob Cooke, CEO of WPIC, an e-commerce technology and marketing company that helps foreign brands sell in China, told CNBC.

There are also currently some categories that have very few products. For example, only two products were listed in the Men’s Watches category.

However, Temu could keep up in terms of price. On Thursday, Temu had a 20% discount offer across the site. And the products seem pretty cheap. For example, most of the women’s dresses listed cost less than $20.

Temu could also have an advantage due to “existing relationships with low-cost manufacturers in China that may not have expanded into the US yet,” Cooke said.

Pinduoduo has grown rapidly in its seven-year history and has become one of the largest e-commerce companies in China. The company has tended to target low-income consumers by offering heavily discounted products. And it has focused on bringing agricultural products to its platform to differentiate itself from the competition. The company is worth around $87 billion.

Pakistan warns greater than $10 billion in flood harm

Pakistan’s foreign minister called for urgent international aid as the death toll from historic floods across the country is expected to rise in the coming days.

Already ravaged by an economic crisis, floods have submerged over a third of the country, killing over 1,000 and affecting 33 million people.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the country’s foreign minister, told CNBC’s Dan Murphy on Thursday that he feared damage from the natural disaster will exceed current estimates of $10 billion, adding that the crisis in the country is still ongoing and is in the “rescue and relief phase”. ”

The flooding, which Bhutto Zardari described to CNBC as “a climate catastrophe of biblical proportions,” is affecting over 95,000 square miles of land. Bhutto Zardari said the crisis is far from over as “southern areas of Pakistan are still preparing for the river floods coming from the north”.

“Pakistan is at this point paying with its life and livelihood for a climate catastrophe not caused by them,” he said. Pakistan’s contribution to global carbon emissions is less than 1%, but it is among the 10 countries most affected by climate change in the world.

The South Asian nation of over 220 million people reported a 27% inflation rate for August, according to government data, and has been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the State Bank of Pakistan, the country’s currency has fallen while net foreign exchange reserves shrank to just $8 billion in August.

Political infighting has swept the country since April after the ouster of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who was charged by Pakistani police under anti-terror laws.

Impact of food inflation

Rural areas in Pakistan will be hit hardest by flooding, which will have a greater impact on Pakistan’s agriculture and ultimately food costs.

Bhutto Zardari told CNBC “about 80 to 90 percent” of Pakistan’s crops were damaged by the floods. The International Rescue Committee reports that 4 million acres of crops were destroyed and 800,000 livestock perished.

Before the disaster, food inflation was much higher in rural provinces than in urban areas. For example, the cost of onions in urban areas of Pakistan increased by 89% from July 2021 to July 2022. In rural areas, this cost increase exceeded 100%.

The International Monetary Fund on Monday approved the release of $1.1 billion in special drawing rights to Pakistan as part of its bailout program that began in 2019.

The money was already part of an aid program designed to help Pakistan stabilize its economy. Pakistan has now launched a joint appeal with the United Nations for about $160 million, which Bhutto Zardari told CNBC “is obviously a very conservative estimate of the absolute minimum requirements right now.”

Over a million homes were destroyed and Bhutto Zardari added that vital infrastructure such as bridges, road networks and dams were damaged. Pakistan, he says, will “need large-scale reconstruction, which will require a lot of work,” in the future.

Biden warns Trump’s MAGA excessive Republicans as ‘hazard’ to US democracy

In a fiery prime-time speech, President Joe Biden launched a sweeping attack on former President Donald Trump and the “MAGA Republicans,” saying they pose “a clear and present threat” to American democracy.

“It is in our hands, yours and mine, to stop the assault on American democracy,” Biden said Thursday at Philadelphia’s Independence Hall, urging Americans to reject fear and violence. “I think America is at a tipping point, one of those moments that will shape the shape of everything that comes after.”

Biden’s call for Americans to stand up for democracy against extremists is the same message he spread and won in the 2020 presidential election. The White House hopes it remains a winning strategy two months before the midterm elections that will decide who controls the House and Senate. The trip marks his second visit to the critical swing state in three days.

“For a long time we have assured ourselves that American democracy is guaranteed. But she’s not,” Biden said. “We have to defend them. Protection. stand up for it. Every single one of us. So tonight, I call on our nation to come together and unite behind the single purpose of defending our democracy, whatever your ideology.”

Democrats’ chances of retaining their majority in both houses have improved in recent weeks, despite mixed economic signals, as Republicans continue to take a backlash from the Supreme Court’s abortion ruling that passed Roe v. Wade was overturned and the investigation into Trump is ongoing. An NBC News poll released last week found that a majority of American voters, 58%, disapprove of Dobbs’ decision and almost the same proportion, 57%, believe the investigation into Trump should go ahead.

“MAGA Forces are determined to push this country back,” Biden said. “Backward to an America where there is no right to choose, no right to privacy, no right to contraception, no right to marry who you love.”

Since Trump took office, Biden has said the country faces “a battle for the soul of the nation.” The importance of the threat to democracy is underscored by Biden’s choice of venue: Independence National Historic Park, where the Constitution was written. The same NBC News poll found that “threats to democracy” have replaced the cost of living as the most pressing issue on voters’ minds.

Biden has recently ramped up his criticism of Republicans, trying to position Democrats as an alternative to an extremist-led party. Last week he called Republicans “semi-fascist” for remaining loyal to the former president. His comments come amid Trump’s legal troubles following the FBI raid on his Mar-A-Lago home in Florida, where the former president has been accused of mishandling classified information.

Camila Morrone is stepping out after Leonardo DiCaprio break up in Malibu

Camila Morrone is ready for the next chapter in her life.

Just a day after sources E! News that the model, 25, and Leonardo DiCaprio, 47, had quit Camila was spotted in new photos shopping in Malibu and browsing apartments with a friend in Beverly Hills. In the pictures from August 31, Camila wears a black summer dress, ballet flats and a black tote.

Her split from the Romeo + Juliet star comes after more than four years of dating.

Leo and Camila first sparked romance rumors in December 2017 after he was spotted leaving their Los Angeles home. That same month, the couple vacationed with Leo’s longtime pal in Colorado Toby Maguire and his two children ruby15 and Otis13.

Before Camila’s shopping spree, Leo was spotted with a group of friends at Il Buco in New York City, where they got a bite to eat. The Don’t Look Up star kept her outfit simple for the evening in a white tee, green shorts and black trainers.

CDC deletes reworded Covid footage concentrating on Omicron in time for varsity

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have released reformulated Covid shots targeting the latest Omicron subvariants for the fall, allowing many people to get an extra boost in days.

The agency’s independent committee on vaccines voted 13-1 in favor of the shots on Thursday after reviewing the available safety and efficacy data in a nearly seven-hour session. CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky approved the injections a few hours later, clearing the way for pharmacies to administer the injections soon.

Pfizer’s Omicron boosters were approved for ages 12+, while Moderna’s updated shots were approved for ages 18+. The eligible age groups can receive the boosters no earlier than two months after the completion of their primary series or their last booster with the old vaccinations.

Walensky said her decision followed “a thorough scientific evaluation and sound scientific discussion.”

“If you are eligible, there is no bad time to get your Covid-19 booster and I strongly encourage you to get it,” she said in a statement.

Pfizer plans to ask the Food and Drug Administration to also approve the new boosters for children ages 5 to 11 in early October, company executives told the committee Thursday.

The original vaccines are no longer used as a booster dose in people aged 12 and over as the reformulated vaccines are now online.

Public health officials expect another wave of Covid infections this fall as immunity to the legacy vaccines wanes, more contagious omicron subvariants spread and people spend more time indoors as the weather turns colder and families close gather for the holidays.

The CDC and FDA hope the new boosters will provide more durable protection against infection, mild illness, and serious illness. The reformulated shots target omicron BA.5, the dominant variant of Covid, as well as the strain that emerged in China more than two years ago.

The US has so far secured 171 million doses of the new boosters from Pfizer and Moderna. More than 200 million people are entitled to the recordings, according to the CDC. dr Sara Oliver, a CDC official, told the committee Thursday there should be enough vaccine supplies to meet demand this fall.

No omicron BA.5 human data

There is no human trial data on the new BA.5 boosters, so it is unclear how they will perform in the real world. The CDC and FDA used human clinical trial data for vaccinations against the original version of Omicron, BA.1, which elicited a stronger immune response than the old vaccines.

Pfizer and Moderna originally developed Omicron boosters for BA.1, but the FDA told the companies to change gears in June and develop BA.5 shots instead after the subvariant became dominant. The decision to focus on BA.5 did not leave enough time to wait for data from human trials before a vaccine launch in the fall.

The lack of human data for the BA.5 vaccines has caused some controversy, but Dr. Peter Marks, a senior FDA official, said the agency has followed the same process it has used for years to change strains for flu vaccines. Marks said Wednesday flu vaccine strains are being changed even without human clinical data.

dr Pablo Sanchez, the only committee member who voted against the injections, called the recommendation premature and said the US should have waited for human data before proceeding with the boosters.

“There’s already a lot of hesitation with vaccines — we need the human data,” said Sanchez, a professor of pediatrics at Ohio State University. But Sanchez said he believes the new boosters are safe and he will likely receive one himself.

Board member Dr. Oliver Brooks, chief medical officer at Watts HealthCare Corporation in Los Angeles, questioned why the FDA chose a BA.5 vaccine when clinical data is available for the BA.1 vaccine that vaccine manufacturers are initially developing had. Brooks eventually voted for the shots.

But dr Sarah Long, also a committee member, said there was no reason to believe the BA.5 boosters will be inferior to the old vaccines as they also contain the original Covid strain and have the potential to increase hospitalizations and deaths along the way in the future to reduce autumn and winter. Long also voted in favour.

mouse studies

FDA and CDC officials have said that the omicron BA.1 and omicron BA.5 boosters are similar enough that the immune response data of the BA.1 vaccine should give a good indication of how the BA.5 vaccine will work. Omicron BA.1 and BA.5 are according to Dr. Jacqueline Miller, who works on vaccine development at Moderna, are closely related and share a difference of four mutations.

Moderna completed enrollment in clinical trials on the BA.5 shots last week and should have results by the end of the year, Miller told the CDC committee on Thursday. Pfizer’s clinical trial is also ongoing, although the company hasn’t said when it expects results.

Health authorities also reviewed data on the BA.5 shots from mouse studies. Moderna presented data showing that the BA.5 shots increased antibodies in mice more than four-fold compared to the old shots. The mice express the same cellular protein as humans, to which the virus attaches. Pfizer’s BA.5 booster increased antibodies in mice by 2.6-fold compared to the original vaccine.

According to the FDA, the most common side effects from the human trials of BA.1 syringes were pain, redness, swelling at the injection site, fatigue, headache, muscle pain, joint pain, chills, nausea, vomiting, and fever.

Oliver, the CDC official, told the committee that health officials do not expect a difference in the safety profile of the BA.1 and BA.5 shots because the subvariants differ by only a few mutations.

However, Oliver noted that the risk of myocarditis following a BA.5 booster dose is unknown. Young men and adolescent boys are at increased risk of myocarditis after the second dose of Pfizer and Moderna, but the risk of myocarditis from Covid infection is higher, according to the CDC.

“We know that the risk of myocarditis is unknown, but expect a risk similar to that seen after the monovalent vaccines,” Oliver said. The monovalent vaccines are the old vaccines that have been given to millions of people in the US over the last two years.

Old vaccines are losing their effectiveness

The original vaccines, which were first approved in December 2020, no longer offer any meaningful protection against infection because the virus has mutated so much in the last two years. The shots were developed against the first strain to appear in China, so they are no longer tailored to attack the expanding Omicron subvariants.

Infections, hospitalizations and deaths have all fallen dramatically since last winter’s massive Omicron outbreak, but have leveled off at stubbornly high levels this summer. Omicron BA.5 is the most contagious and immune-avoidable variant to date, and breakthrough infections have become increasingly common as a result.

The effectiveness of the old vaccines against hospitalization also decreased after omicron BA.5 became dominant. A third dose was 77% effective at preventive hospitalization four months after receiving the shot, but protection dropped to as much as 34% at 120 days, according to CDC data. A fourth dose in people aged 50 and over was 56% effective in preventing hospitalization at four months.

Deaths and hospitalizations from Covid among people aged 65 and older have increased since April, according to Heather Scobie, a CDC epidemiologist who presented data during Thursday’s meeting. The number of deaths has increased, particularly among people aged 75 and over, Scobie said.

The CDC has shifted to a more focused public health response, with a focus on protecting the most vulnerable — the elderly, those with serious illnesses and those with weakened immune systems. Though there’s no data on the real-world effectiveness of the new boosters, the US is moving quickly to introduce them in hopes they’ll protect people this fall.

Small companies determined for employees, at the same time as corporations are slower to rent

While some companies have slowed the pace of hiring due to concerns about an economic slowdown, small business demand for new workers has yet to show any signs of slowing down, said Paychex CEO Marty Mucci.

“We’re still not seeing really strong small business recessionary action here,” Mucci said on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Tuesday.

Hiring rates at small US businesses with fewer than 50 employees have slowed for five straight months, according to data from Paychex and IHS Markit, but Mucci said it has more to do with a shortage of applicants than small business retreats.

“The hardest thing for small businesses is that they have the demand and they need workers – they just have a little bit more difficulty finding them,” he said.

This is in contrast to what is happening in some larger companies. According to ADP’s monthly payroll report, personal payrolls increased by 132,000 in August, down from the 268,000 increase in July.

Nela Richardson, ADP’s chief economist, told CNBC that the data “points to a shift towards a more conservative hiring pace, possibly as companies try to decipher the conflicting signals from the economy.”

“We could be at a tipping point, from supercharged job wins to something more normal,” she added.

But ADP data showed that companies with 500 or more employees grew by 54,000 and medium-sized companies by 53,000, while those with fewer than 50 employees grew by 25,000.

Impact of paying higher wages

Mucci said there are small businesses that are feeling “inflationary pressures on wages”.

Average hourly earnings in August were $30.71, up $1.51 from the same month last year, according to Paychex. Hourly wages rose 5.18% for the month, hitting a record set in May 2011.

The difficulty of both finding workers and having to pay higher wages could lead to a sustained slowdown in hiring activity, Mucci said, adding that “both things are slowing down [hiring] something down.”

According to a recent CNBC/SurveyMonkey small business survey, 50% of small business owners said they had a harder time hiring in the third quarter of 2022 than a year ago, while 28% say they have open positions they’re not filling were able to fill for at least three months. While these numbers are relatively flat from previous quarters, they highlight the hiring difficulties that many small business owners face.

According to the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, there were 11.24 million job openings in July, with the number of vacancies nearly 2 to 1 higher than the available workforce.

August nonfarm payrolls, released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday, are likely to reinforce the view that demand for hiring remains high.

This labor crisis has forced many small businesses to reduce hours or close on certain days, Mucci said. However, he noted that there are a record number of workers with at least two jobs, according to federal labor data. In July, there were 433,000 workers with two full-time jobs, according to data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, compared to 401,000 in July 2021.

“A lot of people are looking for a second job and hopefully small businesses will be the positive recipients of that,” he said.
