Warner Bros. Discovery Executives are on the verge of formulating a new name and platform for the soon-to-be-launched streaming service, which will combine the already existing HBO Max and Discovery+ services.
The expected name of the merged platform, “Max,” is being reviewed by the company’s lawyers, according to people familiar with the matter.
Executives have yet to make a final decision and the name could still be changed, but Max is the likely choice, said people, who asked not to be named because discussions are private. Some executives are still debating a final name, two of the people said. Internally, Warner Bros. Discovery has codenamed the new service “BEAM,” while a final name is under discussion, people said. Lawyers are also checking other names.
The app itself will have similarities to Disney+’s platform, with Warner Bros. Discovery brands as individual tiles, people said. HBO, Discovery, DC Comics and Warner Bros. will be among the landing centers on the platform, the people added.
A spokesman for Warner Bros. Discovery said a name is still being discussed.
CNBC reported last year that WarnerMedia executives wanted a new name for the combined streaming service. While HBO Max’s branding with HBO crystallized the product’s prestige image, several executives felt the name could ultimately dilute the HBO brand, with consumers confusing it with everything on the streaming service.
Chief Executive David Zaslav has cut spending on HBO Max original series, which has helped reform HBO’s branding. Still, HBO has a limited audience, mostly based in the U.S., and the streaming service will offer a lot more than HBO — including reality TV from Discovery, news documentaries from CNN, movies from Warner Bros., children’s programming, and possibly live sports. Zaslav and his team see value in making HBO a sub-brand within the larger streaming offering, people familiar with their mindset said.
Warner Bros. Discovery management has pushed back the launch date for the combined service to Spring 2023, the company announced in its recent conference call in November. Zaslav said during a conference call on the results that a team is preparing to launch the combined offering and is also experimenting with changes “in large part to address some of the shortcomings of the existing platform.”
Zaslav pointed out the recent changes already rolling out on HBO Max that reflect this work, including the addition of Discovery content.
“These early green shoots reinforce our strategic thesis that the two content offerings should work well together and, when combined, should result in increased engagement, reduced churn, and higher customer lifetime value,” Zaslav said on the conference call.
The pricing of the combined streaming service is still being discussed, the people said.
HBO’s confusing branding
There has been debate at Warner Bros. Discovery about keeping HBO in the new streaming service’s name given its prestige. But the removal from the name will also end a number of HBO-branded streaming services that have been confusing consumers. HBO Go and HBO Now preceded HBO Max.
Warner Bros. Discovery is attempting to reform through a series of changes and cost cuts. The company is struggling with a heavy debt load and, like the rest of the industry, is figuring out how to make its streaming business profitable rather than chasing subscribers while spending big bucks on content. Zaslav told investors in November that the focus for the business and its streaming strategy would be achieving profitability and not necessarily subscriber numbers. The company’s goal is to reach $1 billion in streaming revenue by 2025.
“Although we still have a lot of work ahead of us and some difficult decisions ahead of us, we are absolutely convinced of the opportunity that lies ahead of us,” said Zaslav.

Elon Musk’s health-tech venture Neuralink shared updates on its brain implant technology during a “Show and Tell” recruitment event Wednesday night. Musk said during the event that he plans to get one of the implants himself.
Musk said two of the company’s applications will aim to restore vision, even for people born blind, and a third application will focus on the motor cortex and restore “whole-body functionality” for people with severed spinal cords. “We are confident that there are no physical limitations to restore full body functionality,” Musk said.
Neuralink could begin testing the motor cortex technology in humans as early as six months, Musk said.
“Obviously we want to be extremely careful and sure that it works well before we put a device in a human, but we will, I believe, file most of our paperwork with the FDA,” he said.
Musk also said he plans to get one for himself. “You could have a Neuralink device implanted right now and you wouldn’t even know it. I mean, hypothetically… In fact, I’m going to do that in one of these demos,” he said. He repeated this on Twitter after the event.
Because none of Neuralink’s devices have been tested on humans or approved by the FDA, Wednesday’s announcements warrant skepticism, said Xing Chen, an assistant professor in the department of ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
“Neuralink is a company [that] doesn’t have to respond to shareholders,” she told CNBC. “I don’t know how much oversight there is, but I think it’s very important that the public always remember that before anything is approved by the FDA, or any state regulator, all claims must be examined very, very skeptically will.”
Neuralink was founded in 2016 by Musk and a group of other scientists and engineers. It aims to develop brain-computer interfaces, or BCIs, that connect the human brain to computers capable of decoding neural signals.
Musk invested tens of millions of his personal fortune in the company and said without evidence that Neuralink’s devices enable “superhuman cognition,” could enable paralyzed people to one day operate smartphones or robotic limbs with their minds, and “solve” autism and schizophrenia. . .
The company’s presentation on Wednesday reflected those lofty ambitions, with Musk claiming that “wonderful as it sounds, we’re confident it’s possible to restore full bodily function to someone with a severed spinal cord.”
Musk showed footage of a monkey with a computer chip in its skull playing “telepathic video games,” which Neuralink first introduced over a year ago. Neuralink’s flashy presentations are unusual for medical device companies, said Anna Wexler, assistant professor of medical ethics and health policy at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine. She said it’s risky to encourage people with severe disabilities to get their hopes up, especially when they could potentially sustain injuries if the technology is implanted during surgery.
Wexler encouraged people to don their “skeptic hat” over Neuralink’s big claims.
“From an ethical point of view, I find this hype very worrying,” she said. “Space or Twitter, it’s one thing, but when you get into the medical context, there’s more at stake.”
Chen, who specializes in BCIs, said Neuralink’s implants would require patients to undergo a very invasive procedure. Doctors would have to drill a hole in the skull to insert the device into the brain tissue.
Still, she thinks some people would be willing to take the risk.
“There are some conditions like epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and obsessive-compulsive disorder that people have had brain implants for and the conditions have been treated quite successfully, allowing them an improved quality of life,” Chen said. “So I feel like there’s precedent for that.”
Wexler said she believes the decision will ultimately come down to an individual patient’s personal risk-benefit analysis.
Neuralink isn’t the only company trying to innovate using BCIs, and many have made great strides in the last few years. Blackrock Neurotech is on track to launch a BCI system next year, which would be the first commercially available BCI in history. Synchron received FDA approval in 2021 to begin a clinical trial for a permanently implanted BCI, and Paradromics is reportedly preparing to begin human testing in 2023.

An important monoclonal antibody used to treat immunocompromised people who contract Covid is no longer approved for use in the US because it is not effective against emerging omicron subvariants.
The FDA said in a statement Wednesday that bebtelovimab is not approved for use because it is not expected to neutralize subvariants Omicron BQ.1 and BQ.1.1. They cause 57% of new infections nationwide and account for the majority of cases in all but one US region.

US health officials have warned that immunocompromised people are at increased risk from Covid this winter as immune-evading omicron subvariants threaten to knock out antibody treatments they rely on to keep themselves safe from Covid protection.

President Joe Biden has urged people with compromised immune systems to consult with their doctors about what extra precautions they should take this winter to stay safe.
President Joe Biden signed legislation making rail strikes illegal and preventing workers from quitting their jobs weeks before the holiday season.
“The legislation I am about to sign into law ends a difficult railroad dispute and helps our nation avoid what would no doubt have been an economic disaster at a very bad time on the calendar,” Biden said Friday morning before signing the law .
After months of his government backing negotiations and the sides reaching a tentative agreement in September, talks eventually stalled and rail workers threatened to go on strike. Biden then asked Congress to intervene, and the Senate passed legislation on Thursday declaring a strike illegal.
The original agreement, brokered by the Biden administration, was accepted by all but four railroad unions, which were awaiting guaranteed paid sick days. The opposing unions, however, represent the majority of railway workers. Workers and companies had until December 9 to reach an agreement before promising a strike that industry estimates would cost the US economy $2 billion a day.
“Our country’s rail system is literally the backbone of our supply chain,” Biden said Friday. “So much of what we depend on is delivered by rail, from clean water to food and gas to every other commodity. Shutting down rail would have devastated our economy. Without rail freight, many of our industries would have literally come to a standstill.”
A strike by railroad workers so close to the holiday season – and at a time of high inflation – could potentially ruin the economy. Biden insisted Congress send the legislation to his desk by Saturday. Without an agreement, rail transport of certain goods should be restricted as early as this weekend in preparation for the strike.
Biden, signing the law into law on Friday, said his economic advisors told him that up to 765,000 Americans, “many of them union members themselves,” had lost their jobs.
Railroad companies begin preparing for a strike seven days in advance, in accordance with federal safety measures. Shippers are beginning to prioritize the securing and transportation of sensitive materials such as chlorine for drinking water and hazardous materials.
Chemicals are no longer transported 96 hours before a strike. The American Chemistry Council noted a drop of 1,975 carloads of chemical shipments during the week of September 10, when the railroads stopped accepting shipments due to the prior threat of a rail strike.
The big four railroads also typically carry more than 80% of agricultural freight, according to the National Grain and Feed Association.
Congress has the power to regulate interstate commerce under Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution, and the Supreme Court has ruled that it can use that power to intervene in railroad worker disputes that have the potential to affect trade across state lines to affect. “I know this has been a difficult vote for members of both parties. It was a difficult set-up for me,” Biden said. “But it was the right thing to do at the moment to save jobs, protect millions of working families from harm and disruption, and keep the supply chain stable over the holidays.”
The situation put “Union Joe” Biden in a difficult position. Biden said Thursday he still supports the unions, but as President of the United States, and not as an individual senator from Delaware, it’s his job to look out for all Americans. He said he has long been a supporter of paid sick leave and will continue to advocate that it is a right for all workers, not just railroad workers.
The original White House-brokered agreement would give rail workers a 24% pay increase over five years from 2020 to 2024 and immediate payouts averaging $11,000 upon ratification. Under the deal, workers would be given an extra day off with pay and a promise that they could show up for doctor’s appointments without penalty.
However, workers balked at the lack of paid sick leave because the agreement required them to use unpaid time off to see doctors. Biden on Friday admitted his disappointment that paid sick leave was not included in the agreement.
“Look, I know this bill doesn’t have paid sick leave that these workers, frankly every worker in America, deserve, but this fight isn’t over,” Biden said. “I didn’t promise that we would stop just because we couldn’t bring it into this bill that we would stop fighting for it. I’ve supported paid sick leave for a long time and will continue this fight until we succeed.”
Union leaders told CNBC they would remember who opposed them in the upcoming election. Union support was critical in forming Biden’s eventual winning coalition in the 2020 election.
“Our membership will support everyone who stands by them,” said Tony Cardwell, president of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Division. “It looks like Democrats are standing with our members and making sure our members are on sick leave. If that’s the case, we will. and vote with our members, then there’s a good chance they can win votes too.”
The provision to add seven days of paid sick leave failed in the Senate by a vote of 52 to 43. All Democrats present to vote supported it except Sen. Joe Manchin, DW.Va. Six Republicans also supported the measure.
In the House of Representatives, three GOP representatives joined all Democrats in passing the sick leave proposal.
