MITCH MCCONNELL, MINORITY LEADER OF THE UNITED STATES SENATE: The newly elected leader of the Democratic House of Representatives is a former election denier who basically said the 2016 election, quote, was illegitimate. And suggested we had a, quote, fake president.

STEPHANOPOULOS: Proposing equivalence there with Donald Trump. What is your answer?
JEFFRIES: Well, you know, it’s unfortunate that Republicans have chosen to focus on me, House Democrats will focus on solving problems for the American people.
STEPHANOPOULOS: But you said that history will never accept Donald Trump as a legitimate president, and Republicans are making a pretty big problem out of that. What is your answer?
JEFFRIES: Well, here’s the Republicans’ playbook, facts don’t matter, hypocrisy is no bar to their behavior, and in many cases they believe that shamelessness is a superpower.
My view of the situation was pretty clear, I supported confirming Donald Trump’s election, I attended his inauguration despite many voters and others across the country urging me and others to do otherwise and finding ways to work with Trump The government is the lead Democrat in negotiations for historic criminal justice reform.
This track record speaks for itself. At the same time, I will never hesitate to criticize the former President. I think I’m in good company there in the world.

There is no equivalence between Jeffries and Trump, but Mitch McConnell pulls such an extreme stunt on his Democrats that he always backs down to divert attention from a big loss, and Republicans have lost a lot lately.
Rep. Jeffries also sent a message to House and Senate Republicans that he could be a new leader, but he will not be defined by them.
Republicans can break rules and norms because they are shameless. They don’t care if they are called hypocrites.
The GOP doesn’t want to talk about continuing to support an authoritarian who wants to destroy the Constitution, so they draw false comparisons and hope to distract from opposition to the ideals on which our nation was built.
