Wave power system reaches vital milestone, gears up for testing

The Waveswing device is now ready for testing.

A project centered around the development of a subsea wave energy converter has taken another step forward after its two major constituent parts were joined together at a facility in Scotland.

According to a statement from AWS Ocean Energy on Wednesday, the assembly, which it described as “a critical milestone”, took place last week. A “final hook-up” of internal systems is now taking place and commissioning and dry testing of the 16 kilowatt device, known as the Archimedes Waveswing, is expected to happen in early July.

The plan is to deploy and test the tech at the European Marine Energy Center in Orkney, an archipelago located north of mainland Scotland, later this year. The site for this testing will be in the sheltered waters of Scapa Flow.

The Waveswing — which has been described as a “submerged wave power buoy” — weighs 50 metric tons, has a diameter of 4-meters and stands 7-meters tall. The device, AWS Ocean Energy says, “reacts to changes in sub-sea water pressure caused by passing waves and converts the resulting motion to electricity via a direct-drive generator.”

Funding for the £3.4 million ($4.73 million) project has come from Wave Energy Scotland, which is itself funded by the Scottish government.

The progress update on AWS Ocean Energy’s device comes in the same month that another firm, Mocean Energy, said its Blue X wave machine — which is 20-meters long and weighs 38 metric tons — had started testing. Mocean Energy’s testing is also taking place at EMEC’s Scapa Flow site.

In a statement issued on June 14, Cameron McNatt, the firm’s managing director, said: “In the Scapa testing phase, we will test power production, comparing results against our numerical predictions, and we will test operations including towing, installation, removal, and access at sea.”

“The device is standalone and operated wirelessly,” he added. “A 4G connection allows us to send commands and download data from shore.”

Since its inception in 2003, EMEC has become a hub for the development of wave and tidal power, helping to put the U.K. at the heart of the planet’s emerging marine energy sector.

A wide range of companies have undertaken testing at the site over the years. These include Scotland’s Orbital Marine Power, which is working on what it describes as the world’s most powerful tidal turbine, and Spain-based tidal power firm Magallanes Renovables.

There may be excitement in some quarters regarding the potential of marine energy, but its current footprint is tiny compared to other renewable technologies such as solar and wind.

Recent figures from Ocean Energy Europe show that only 260 kW of tidal stream capacity was added in Europe last year, while just 200 kW of wave energy was installed.

In comparison, 2020 saw 14.7 gigawatts of wind energy capacity installed in Europe, according to industry body WindEurope.

Biden commemorates Pleasure Month and names Pulse Nightclub a nationwide memorial

President Joe Biden commemorated Pride Month at the White House Friday and designated the location of the 2016 Pulse Nightclub shooting a national memorial.

Biden signed a bill honoring the 49 people killed in a mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida on Nov.

The bill passed the Senate by vote earlier this month and the House of Representatives passed its own version in May.

The president also announced the appointment of Jessica Stern, leader of New York’s human rights group OutRight Action International, as special envoy to the State Department. Stern will help guide U.S. diplomatic efforts to advance the human rights of LGBTQI + people around the world.

Biden signed the bill along with survivors of the shooting and the victim’s family members, as well as members of the Florida Congressional Delegation and the Congressional Equality Caucus.

“The site of the deadliest attack on the LBGTQ + community in American history is now a national memorial,” said Biden.

The President, along with Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, made remarks who broke barriers by becoming the first openly gay man to serve in the Cabinet. The president was introduced by 16-year-old transgender advocate Ashton Mota. In attendance were LGBTQ + advocates, elected state and local officials, and members of Congress.

“The fact that we are here shows how much change is possible in America,” said Buttigieg on the podium.

Biden is also urged that the Senate pass the Equality Act, a landmark bill on LGBTQ + rights that would create legal protection for LGBTQ + Americans. The bill was passed by the House of Representatives on February 25, but faces an tougher battle in the evenly divided Senate.

He also condemned the recent proliferation of anti-LGBTQ + laws passed in several states. According to the National Center for Transgender Equality, 23 states reviewed more than 50 bills targeting transgender youth during the 2021 legislature.

“More than a dozen of them have already passed … let’s get that straight, this is nothing more than bullying disguised as legislation,” Biden said.

Biden also outlined the steps his government has taken to advocate for equality for LGBTQ + Americans. This includes, among other things, the recognition of Pride Month in a proclamation from 1.

“Representation is important, recognition is important. Another thing that matters is results, ”Biden said at the White House. “I am proud to lead the most professional LGBTQ equality administration in US history.”

Anheuser-Busch InBev CEO on return to pre-Covid consuming routines

Outgoing Anheuser-Busch InBev CEO Carlos Brito told CNBC on Friday that people have been eager to return to pre-pandemic drinking routines as coronavirus vaccinations picked up across the U.S. and bars and restaurants faced fewer restrictions.

“Once vaccines were being rolled out, we saw some states ahead of others and we saw how consumers were reacting to this new normal,” Brito told “Squawk Box.”  “And we saw that a lot of the new normal was just like the old normal in that people were dying to go back to old habits.”

Brito — who steps down July 1 after 15 years leading the world’s largest beer brewer — said AB InBev adjusted its supply chain to produce a more “normal balance” of bottles and draft beer, anticipating that home consumption would take a less prominent role.

The home had became the “hub” for living, entertainment and working all at once during the pandemic, Brito noted, commending the company for how it responded to that change.

“Our guys in supply chain, sales had to be very agile, very flexible,” Brito said. “There was a big shift in dislocation among channels, packaging, brands because consumers couldn’t buy in pubs and restaurants so they had to resort to grocery stores, and they found their way to loved products.”

AB InBev shares are now up about 50% in the past 12 months and more than 7% year to date.

The Bud Light brewer also has seen the emergence of what Brito dubbed a “fourth category” of drinks that covers the intersection of wine, beer and cocktail beverages. Ready-to-drink cocktails is the fastest-growing alcohol category, with beverage companies and industry experts predicting further growth.

“It’s an amazing category. It’s growing. It goes to specific consumer needs of lower calories, lower carbs, gluten free, in many instances, more co-ed,” Brito said. “It’s something that’s great for us because it’s very profitable.”

Beer consumption has been declining in recent years as consumers either opt for substitutes such as hard seltzer and canned cocktails or choose to drink less or not at all. AB InBev has added new products, such as Bud Light Seltzer, to adapt to changing tastes.

Michel Doukeris, who serves as the head of the company’s North American business, will take the reins from Brito. During Brito’s leadership, he led the acquisitions of Anheuser-Busch and SABMiller, which revolutionized the company’s global scale and cut costs along the way.

Tens of millions may very well be affected by lengthy Covid, British research suggests

A study in England looking at persistent Covid-19 symptoms suggests that around 2 million people in the country may have had the condition known as “long Covid.”

The study, part of Imperial College London’s REACT research which is tracking the virus in England, saw 508,707 people across the country of roughly 56 million asked whether they’d had Covid (confirmed or suspected), and asked about the presence and duration of 29 different symptoms linked to the virus.

Among the 76,155 participants that said they had experienced a symptomatic Covid infection, 37.7% said they experienced at least one symptom lasting 12 weeks or more, while almost 15% of people said they had experienced three or more symptoms lasting 12 weeks or more.

The symptoms of long Covid can vary, with people reporting ongoing fatigue, shortness of breath, memory loss or problems with concentration (dubbed “brain fog”), insomnia, chest pain or dizziness, as well as other symptoms. But it is still poorly understood and scientists don’t yet know why some people continue to have symptoms post-Covid, and others none.

“In this large community-based study of symptoms following Covid-19 among adults aged 18 years and above in England, participants reported high prevalence of persistent symptoms lasting 12 weeks or more,” the researchers at Imperial noted of their latest study.

Extrapolating the findings in the study to the wider Covid backdrop in England, where there have been 4.07 million Covid cases confirmed to date, the study could mean that over 2 million adults who have had the virus in England may have experienced some form of long Covid.

“Estimates ranged from 5.8% of the population experiencing one or more persistent symptoms post-Covid-19 (corresponding to over 2 million adults in England), to 2.2% for three or more persistent symptoms (just under a million adults in England),” the researchers noted.

They said that their estimates of the proportion of people with persistent Covid symptoms were higher than in many other studies, although previous estimates have varied widely.

“Our comparatively high estimate, at 37.7% of people with Covid-19 experiencing one or more symptoms at 12 weeks, may partly reflect the large list of symptoms we surveyed, many of which are common and not specific to Covid-19. However, we asked participants only about symptoms that they related to a confirmed or suspected episode of Covid-19, and not to symptoms more generally.”

Scientists are still investigating long Covid, and experts have urged the British government to address its public health implications; the National Health Service has opened long Covid assessment centers, for example.

“A substantial proportion of people with symptomatic Covid-19 go on to have persistent symptoms for 12 weeks or more, which is age-dependent. Clinicians need to be aware of the differing manifestations of Long Covid which may require tailored therapeutic approaches,” researchers at Imperial said.

The survey data was collected between Sept. 15 last year and Feb. 8 and the study is a preprint, and has not yet been peer-reviewed or published in a journal.

Two friends on board Royal Caribbean Cruise take a look at constructive for Covid

Two guests on board Royal Caribbean Cruises’ Adventure of the Seas ship tested positive for Covid-19 in routine tests and are now returning home, the company said on Thursday.

This comes after two guests tested positive on Royal Caribbean’s Celebrity Millennium cruise and the company’s Odyssey of the Seas was delayed from sailing after eight crew members tested positive.

Both guests were unvaccinated and under 16 years old. One guest is asymptomatic and the other has mild symptoms.

Other guests traveling with the two minors and guests who have come into close contact with them have all been vaccinated and tested negative, according to the company.

The guests and fellow travelers disembarked in the Bahamas and are on their way home to Florida.

According to Royal Caribbean, 92% of guests on the Adventures of the Seas ship are fully vaccinated, and the remaining 8% of guests are under 16 years of age. All crew members are fully vaccinated.

The CDC allowed cruises to return this year with strict safety protocols and requirements to prevent outbreaks from occurring on board after multiple outbreaks on board ships last year.

The cruise industry is among the last to return to pre-pandemic surgery due to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s strict guidelines.

Cruise ship stocks have fallen again after taking a major blow during the pandemic.

Royal Caribbean Cruises line stocks are up more than 16% this year, hitting a market cap of just over $ 22 billion.

Biden reiterated his help for the bipartisan infrastructure plan, didn’t threaten along with his veto

President Joe Biden said Saturday he has no plans to veto a bipartisan infrastructure bill if it comes without a reconciliation package, going back on a statement last week that he would refuse to sign it unless that both bills would come together.

The comment angered some Republican lawmakers, including Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell, who said the president threatened to veto the bipartisan agreement in a Senate statement Thursday.

“This statement understandably upset some Republicans who do not see the two plans as linked,” the president said in a statement.

“My comments also gave the impression that I threatened to veto the very plan that I had just approved, which was certainly not my intention,” said the president.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers signed an infrastructure initiative deal on Thursday after weeks of negotiations to work out a package that could get through Congress with the support of Republicans and Democrats. The framework calls for $ 579 billion in new spending to improve the country’s roads, bridges, and broadband.

The second bill would include funding for Democratic-backed issues such as climate change, childcare, health care and education, issues that administrators have termed “human infrastructure”. It would go through a Senate process called Reconciliation, which does not require Republican votes.

House spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi, D-California, said Thursday morning the House of Representatives would not adopt either of the bills until both are passed by the Senate. The Democrats cannot lose a single vote on a reconciliation law in the divided chamber.

Biden said he will ask Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, DN.Y., to plan the Infrastructure Plan and Atonement Act for action in the Senate, and expects both to go to the House of Representatives.

“Ultimately, I am confident that Congress will bring both of these to my desk so that I can immediately sign any bill,” said Biden.

Read the President’s full statement here:

On Thursday, I reached an historic agreement with a bipartisan group of senators on a $ 1.2 trillion plan to remodel our physical infrastructure. The plan would be the largest investment in infrastructure in history, the largest investment in rail transportation since Amtrak was founded, and the largest investment in transit ever. It would repair roads and bridges, make major investments in our clean energy future, and help this country compete with China and other economic competitors. It would replace lead water pipes in our schools and homes, and connect every American to high-speed internet. It would create millions of highly paid jobs that could not be outsourced.

In the days since, the main focus in Washington has not been on the scope, scope, or terms of the plan – but rather how it relates to other law before Congress: my American family plan. The American Families Plan – which would make historic investments in education, health care, childcare, and tax cuts for families, coupled with other investments in caring for our seniors, housing, and clean energy – has widespread support among the American people, but not among Republicans in the United States Congress.

It was clear to me from the start that I hope the infrastructure plan could be a plan that Democrats and Republicans work on together while I would try to pass my family plan and other provisions down through the process known as reconciliation. There was no doubt or no ambiguity about my intention to do so.

At a press conference following the announcement of the bipartisan agreement, I stated that I would refuse to sign the Infrastructure Bill if it were sent to me without my family plan and other priorities, including clean energy. This statement understandably angered some Republicans who did not see the two plans as linked; they hope to thwart my family plan – and do not want their support for the infrastructure plan to be seen as aiding in the adoption of the family plan.

What I said also gave the impression that I threatened to veto the very plan that I had just agreed to, which was certainly not my intention. To be clear, our bipartisan agreement doesn’t prevent Republicans from foiling my family plan; likewise, you should have no objection to my dedicated efforts to get this family plan and other proposals adopted concurrently. We let the American people – and Congress – decide.

The bottom line is: I gave my word to support the infrastructure plan, and I intend to. I intend to vigorously pursue the adoption of this plan, which the Democrats and Republicans agreed on Thursday. It would be good for the economy, good for our country, good for our people. I stand behind it wholeheartedly, without reservation or hesitation.

Some other Democrats have said they could oppose the infrastructure plan because it leaves out points that they think are important: I think that’s a mistake. Some Republicans are now saying they might oppose the infrastructure plan because I am also trying to get the American Families plan passed: that, too, is a mistake in my opinion. I intend to work hard to ensure that both will pass because our country needs both – and I ran a successful campaign for the president that promised to do both. Nobody should be surprised that I am doing just that.

I will ask Head of State Schumer to pass both the infrastructure plan and the draft reconciliation in the Senate. I expect both of them to go to the House of Representatives, where I will work with Speaker Pelosi on the way forward after the Senate action. Ultimately, I am confident that Congress will have both of these at my desk so that I can sign any bill in a timely manner.

‘Good Women’ Canceled After 4 Seasons At NBC After Plans To Transfer To Netflix Fall Aside

Good Girls

I know they’re not going to leave fans hangin’ like this! The last five episodes of #NBC’s “Good Girls” will be its last.

The Hollywood Reporter reports NBC has canceled the dramedy after four seasons. The show is still airing in its fourth season and will finish out its last few episodes this summer.

There were efforts to move the series to #Netflix, where the show has gained a fan base, but those plans imploded and the series will not make the move to the streaming service as an original series for a fifth season.

Sources told THR that NBC and its in-house studio, Universal Television, wanted to bring the show back for a fifth — and final — season but could not come to a financial agreement that would have allowed the show to live on for one more season.

Things weren’t looking too good for the show–which stars Christina Hendricks, Mae Whitman and Retta as friends who become involved in a criminal enterprise–as the viewership went downhill in this current season.

The fourth season averaged a mere 0.7 million viewers in the 18-49 demographic, down more than 22 percent year-over-year, and 2.74 million total viewers when factoring in seven days of delayed viewing.

The deal at Netflix seemed likely after former NBC co-president of scripted content Tracey Pakosta — who renewed the show multiple times during her run at the network — left NBC to become head of comedy at Netflix. One factor that could have been an issue with the show moving would have been Universal TV asking Netflix to take on more production costs for the show.

How do y’all feel about “Good Girls” not getting a proper ending? Do you think it should be saved? Let us know!

Richard Branson Virgin Galactic versus Jeff Bezos Blue Origin

Sir Richard Branson (left) and CEO Michael Colglazier celebrate the company’s third space test on May 22, 2021.

Virgo galactic

Jeff Bezos plans to venture to the edge of space on July 20th, but his billionaire colleague Sir Richard Branson could still try to fly Virgin Galactic first.

Virgin Galactic’s leadership previously announced that the company would conduct three more space flights to complete development tests of the VSS Unity spacecraft. The company is working to start flying paying passengers in early 2022 after completing a successful mission with just two pilots last month

Under this plan, the first of the next three flights would carry four passengers to test the spacecraft’s cabin, the second would fly with Branson, and the third would fly members of the Italian Air Force for professional astronaut training.

But a report earlier this month from a blogger based in Mojave, Calif. – where Virgin Galactic makes its vehicles – said the company is considering reorganizing its flight schedule to take Branson off next instead of the second. The report came shortly after Bezos announced that he would be flying on Blue Origin’s first passenger space flight, which was scheduled to take off on July 20 – suggesting that Branson might still try to beat Bezos by hitting on the weekend of April 4 July personally flies into space.

Jeff Bezos is heading to where the New Shepard capsule landed in the Texas desert after a test flight in April 2021.

Blue origin

Virgin Galactic has neither confirmed nor denied that it is considering reorganizing its space plan, CEO Michael Colglazier emphasized in an interview with CNBC.

“I know there is a lot of interest and speculation, but we haven’t announced the date or the people who will be there,” said Colglazier. “We have three more flights in our flight test program and we are on this path and will continue on this path.”

Branson’s Virgin Galactic, founded in 2004, and Bezos’ Blue Origin, founded in 2000, compete to take passengers to the edge of space on short flights, a sector known as suborbital tourism. The company’s space probes reach an altitude of around 80 to 100 kilometers (or around 260,000 to 330,000 feet) and spend a few minutes in weightlessness.

Virgin Galactic’s shares rose more than 30% in trading Friday after it was announced that the FAA had granted the company the license it needs to fly passengers on future space flights.

“The flight test program is now shifting from … some of the technical aspects – which we have continued to prove for ourselves and for the FAA – and are now shifting to the cabin experience,” said Colglazier. “The first of these [next three spaceflights] we said we would have four mission specialists, the second also, and then one, followed by the Italian astronauts. “

Changing sides

Virgin Galactic’s Unity spacecraft prepares for flight.

Virgo galactic

Colglazier emphasized that “the May 22 flight was very successful for us” and with the FAA approval now in place, Virgin Galactic is “turning to see when we will be ready for our next space flight”.

While Virgin Galactic is hoping to fly multiple starships each week, the company’s VSS Unity spacecraft is currently the only one in its fleet, making turnaround time a key factor if Branson plans to launch before July 20th.

When Virgin Galactic made its first and second spaceflights more than two years ago, it took the company 71 days to turn the spacecraft around between launches.

In order to be able to start the next space flight by the 4th of July weekend, the spaceship has to be prepared in just 43 days. But a turnaround time of 71 days would mean Virgin Galactic’s next space flight departs on August 1st, a few weeks after Bezos plans the flight.

However, Virgin Galactic used to launch rocket-powered test flights faster. When the company began testing in 2018, it launched VSS Unity on three rocket-powered flights at increasingly higher altitudes as it got closer to space. On these three rocket-powered flights – launched on April 5, May 29 and July 26, 2018 – VSS turned Unity around in 54 and 58 days, respectively.

Launching before July 20 would require Virgin Galactic to prepare VSS Unity in 58 days or less – essentially faster than ever.

At the moment, Colglazier said Virgin Galactic was “just not at one point” to discuss when the next spaceflight would be possible.

“We are very methodical about this, with safety first, and when we have checked all of those boxes and taken all steps, then we can go ahead and make that known,” said Colglazier.

Marjorie Taylor Greene Calls For AOC To Be Locked Up At Trump Rally

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene fed her AOC obsession at Trump’s Ohio Rally by calling for the New York congresswoman to be locked up.

Video:

Marjorie Taylor Greene calls AOC a little communist and says locking her up is a good idea. She also says AOC isn’t an American pic.twitter.com/aCT1JTtC69

— Acyn (@Acyn) June 26, 2021

Greene called AOC, the little communist from New York City, and then said, “Yeah, lock her up too. That’s a good idea. She’s not an American. She really doesn’t embrace our American ways.”

The Trump crowd has this obsession with locking up their enemies while they are under investigation. Greene is being looked at for potentially having a role in the 1/6 attack on the Capitol, but she is calling for AOC to be locked up.

Rep. Green has long been obsessed with AOC, most likely because Ocasio-Cortez is everything that she isn’t. AOC is a hard worker who has policy ideas that are taken seriously by her colleagues.

Taylor Greene is a conspiracy theorist who is been labeled a danger to others in the House, and she isn’t taken seriously by anyone.

AOC isn’t going to be locked up. The same can’t be said with any degree of confidence about Marjorie Taylor Greene.
