We should always “contemplate” attainable reprisals by the police following the conviction of Chauvin

Much of the conversation this week on the Derek Chauvin case centered on what could happen if he were acquitted. Many feared that serious unrest could break out on the streets.

What wasn’t really discussed, however, was how cops could respond to a guilty verdict. That was a topic of conversation between Nicolle Wallace and Eddie Glaude after the announcement.

Wallace began the conversation by saying, “When we are honest with ourselves, we know that true justice is about much more than a single judgment in a single trial. “

Glaude replied to the comment, “My stomach was knotted. I told you that, Nicolle. This is a moment of relief, but it is a first moment. It is a beginning. There is no end. Justice is a practice. There is no end. We need to understand that we are in this moment of transition to change the nature of policing. “

The Princeton professor continued:

“The last point I want to make quickly is that we have prepared for the violence of protests. Now we have to prepare for the police reaction. We were prepared for the demonstrators and what they could do if the verdict was so passed that they were not satisfied. Now we need to be clear about what it means for these tectonic plates to change in the same way that policing takes place in the country. “
