The Indian outbreak places the worldwide struggle in opposition to Covid in danger, says Dr. Ashish Jha

The Covid outbreak in India puts the rest of the world at risk and leaves a “humanitarian disaster,” warned the dean of Brown University’s School of Public Health on Monday.

“India is a big country, and of course if there are big outbreaks there we will worry about more variants that will be bad for Indians and … it will spread all over the world,” said Dr Ashish Jha. “Part of America’s security is vaccinating the whole world.”

The White House promised to send more than $ 100 million worth of medical supplies to India as the country breaks global infection records almost daily. The country recorded more than 300,000 new cases for 12 days, but experts fear the real numbers could be much higher. Data shows that only about 2% of the Indian population is fully vaccinated against Covid.

Jha told CNBC’s “The News with Shepard Smith” that the US should distribute them worldwide since the US is now at a point where it has more vaccine supply than demand.

“I think we should keep sharing it with the world and helping them get vaccinated. This is how we will end the pandemic worldwide,” Jha said.
