During the 2020 Oscars, it wasn’t a virus, but a parasite that was on everyone’s lips.
It was only a year since Parasite was directed by the South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-Ho– Swept the Oscars.
Many of us lost track of time during the coronavirus pandemic. So allow us to refresh your memory: just a month before a global lockdown began, the 2020 Oscars were held live, as usual, at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood. For Bong it was a night of movie magic.
Jane Fonda announced the winner of the best picture at the very end and paused before reading the name from the envelope. When Parasite was called, the anti-genre film made history by becoming the first non-English language film to win the best picture in the awards show’s 92-year history.
“I’m speechless,” executive producer Kwak Sin-ae said of a translator while receiving the trophy. “We never thought this would ever happen. We are so happy. I have a feeling that a very auspicious moment is happening in history. I express my deepest thanks and respect to all members of the Academy for this decision.”
