LONDON – German Chancellor Angela Merkel has blown Twitter’s decision to ban US President Donald Trump.

“The right to freedom of expression is of fundamental importance,” said Steffen Seibert, Merkel’s chief spokesman, to reporters in Berlin on Monday.

“In view of this, the Chancellor considers it problematic that the President’s accounts have been permanently suspended.”

Seibert said while Twitter rightly flagged Trump’s inaccurate tweets about the election, the ban on his account as a whole was a step too far.

Twitter wasn’t immediately available for comment when contacted by CNBC.

Twitter made the move on Friday after the outcry over the riot on Capitol Hill. The move deprived the U.S. leader of his ability to communicate on the social media platform, which accelerated his rise to the presidency and continued to play a key role during his tenure.

Violence ensued in Washington, DC, which led to international outcry and renewed calls for Trump’s impeachment. The president had urged his supporters to protest against the solemn confirmation by Congress of Joe Biden as president.

LONDON – Japan’s National Institute for Infectious Diseases (NIID) announced on Sunday that it had discovered a new variant of the coronavirus in four travelers arriving from Brazil.

The newly discovered mutant strain of Covid-19 was found to share some of the mutations with those who fear increased infectivity, the institute said, referring to highly infectious strains recently discovered in the UK and South Africa.

Currently, however, all information about the new variant is limited to its genetic makeup, according to the NIID. The institute added that it was difficult to immediately determine how contagious the new strain is and how effective vaccines are against it.

The World Health Organization has been contacted by CNBC to confirm whether it has been informed of the new mutant strain of the virus. The United Nations Health Department was not immediately available for a response Monday morning.

Japan’s identification of a new variant of the virus comes when countries contain two more contagious variants that have emerged in the UK and South Africa. Public health experts have raised concerns that the new strains could pose a threat to vaccination efforts.

While the variants discovered in the UK and South Africa are spreading more easily, there is no clear evidence that the mutated viruses are associated with more severe disease outcomes. However, being more communicable means more people can become infected, and that could mean more serious infections and more deaths.

In recent weeks, optimism about the mass rollout of Covid vaccines appears to have been tempered by the resurgent rate of virus spread around the world.

What do we know about the new variant?

On January 6, Japan’s NIID discovered a new mutant strain of Covid in four passengers who arrived from the Brazilian state of Amazonas on January 2.

A man in his forties who was found to be asymptomatic when he arrived in Japan was hospitalized when his breathing got worse. A woman in her thirties reported a sore throat and headache, a man between 10 and 19 years of age had a fever, and a young woman over 10 was asymptomatic.

The variant of the virus discovered in Japan belongs to the strain B.1.1.248 and, according to NIID, has 12 mutations in the spike protein.

According to the Japanese Ministry of Health, studies are currently underway to determine the effectiveness of coronavirus vaccines against the new variant, Reuters reported on Sunday, citing a ministerial official who was not named.

What about the tribes discovered in the UK and South Africa?

On December 14th, the UK health authorities reported a variant to the WHO identified as SARS-CoV-2 VOC 202012/01. It is unclear how the new strain came about, but preliminary results have shown that the strain is highly transmissible.

It initially appeared in the southeast of England, but within a few weeks the variant of the virus had already started replacing other virus lines in some regions of the country.

Britain is struggling to contain the spread of the virus and already stressed health facilities are under increasing pressure across the country. As of December 30th, the variant VOC-202012/01 was reported in 31 other countries and areas worldwide.

Independently of this, the national authorities in South Africa announced the detection of the variant 501Y.V2 on December 18. The WHO said routine sequencing showed that this variant had largely replaced other SARS-CoV-2 viruses circulating in the Eastern Cape, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces by mid-November.

Preliminary studies have shown that the 501Y.V2 variant also has increased transferability, but there is no clear evidence that it is associated with worse disease outcomes. It had been reported in four other countries by December 30th.

How is the situation in Japan?

Japan declared a state of emergency in the greater Tokyo area on Thursday after a record number of Covid cases were reported in the country’s capital.

Whitty warns that the following few weeks would be the worst

LONDON – England’s Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty warned Monday that the “next few weeks” will be the worst weeks of the coronavirus pandemic for the UK’s National Health Service.

Speaking to the BBC, Whitty stressed that more than 30,000 people have now been hospitalized with the virus across England alone.

The number of people across the UK who have died from the virus topped 80,000 over the weekend, reaching 81,567, according to Johns Hopkins University. On Friday, London Mayor Sadiq Khan declared a serious incident over the rapid spread of Covid-19 in the British capital. One in 30 Londoners is said to be sick with the virus.

Whitty said that as a result, people would have to “double” compliance with public health restrictions as it would take several weeks for the coronavirus vaccines currently in use to take effect.

“Every single unnecessary contact you have with someone is a potential link in the chain of transmission that leads to a person at risk,” said Whitty.

Vaccine Use Minister Nadhim Zahawi said in a statement released on Sunday that around 1.5 million Britons have now received the Covid-19 surge. Johnson & Johnson Covid Vaccine: Analysts are cautiously optimistic

LONDON – Health systems around the world are struggling to cope with the rising number of Covid-19 infections as they race against the clock to vaccinate the vulnerable.

The three vaccines currently approved for use in large Western economies all require two separate vaccinations. Given the limited supply, governments are considering controversial tactics such as increasing the time between doses in order to get at least one dose to as many people as possible.

A one-shot vaccine could vastly improve our ability to fight the virus – and we may have one soon.

J & J’s late trial

Johnson & Johnson is expected to deliver preliminary late-stage study results for its single-dose Covid vaccine candidate by the end of January. If the push turns out to be safe and effective, the company will aim to have at least 1 billion doses by the end of the year.

The J&J vaccine was developed by the company’s Belgian unit, Janssen Pharmaceutica, and is based on adenovirus viral vector technology, the same approach used to make the Oxford-AstraZeneca University vaccine. This type of shot is easier to scale than those developed by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, which are based on messenger RNA technology.

Shore Capital health analyst Adam Barker said in an email to CNBC last week, “The J&J vaccine is more like the AstraZeneca vaccine, but uses only one dose. So we know this approach works (viral vector) and we know the goal will work. But we have to see what a dose does. “

The Morgan Stanley health team said in a research report released last week that J & J’s vaccine “offers unique elements and efficacy that could be positive compared to AstraZeneca, increasing confidence in pandemic response and recovery Strengthens the market “.

Supply contracts

The company is committed to selling the vaccine on a non-profit basis for emergency use.

J&J entered into an agreement with the United States in August 2020 to supply 100 million doses of the vaccine after FDA approval or approval and the option to purchase up to 200 million additional doses under a subsequent agreement.

The UK negotiated a deal in August to purchase an initial 30 million doses of the J&J vaccine, with the option to purchase up to 22 million additional doses. The EU signed a contract with J&J in October to supply up to 400 million cans.

J & J has also agreed to provide up to 500 million doses of its vaccine to lower-income countries through COVAX under a fundamental agreement with The Vaccine Alliance (Gavi), which is responsible for equitable access to vaccines. Documentary filmmaker Jon Ossoff will be the state’s first Jewish Senator and the youngest Senator in the new Congress.

The high turnout of black voters and other color voters led to Warnock and Ossoff’s historic victories in Georgia – the culmination of years of efforts to organize and mobilize local voters.

More than 4.4 million ballots have already been counted in the run-off elections, which has shaken the turnout records for such elections in Georgia. With all votes counted, turnout could reach up to 92% of that in the general election, according to NBC projections.

“It is less a story about the poor Republican turnout than the Democratic turnout, especially the black turnout, which is much higher than predicted,” said Bernard Fraga, political scientist at Emory University in Atlanta, who analyzes runoff data Has .

Black voters made up the majority of the victorious Warnock and Ossoff electoral base, Fraga said. Around 30% of registered voters in Georgia are black and 92% of black voters supported the Democratic Senate candidates.

Latino and Asian American voters also supported Ossoff and Warnock at rates of 63-64% and 60-61%, respectively. A historic spike in voter turnout in Latin America and Asia resulted in Biden breaking profit margins in the general election and a runoff in the U.S. Senate races in Georgia when no candidate received more than 50% of the vote in November.

The high democratic turnout is due in part to the rigorous voting efforts of the Warnock and Ossoff campaigns, with a particular focus on black, Latin American, and Asian-American communities. The Democratic Party’s coordinated campaign made over 25 million voter contact attempts through door-to-door advertisements, phone calls and text messages during the runoff election, according to spokeswoman Maggie Chambers, which reached over a million Georgia voters.

But more grassroots organizations came from dozens of nonprofits and advocacy groups working at full speed, especially organizations that focused on racial and ethnic communities. Their voter mobilization efforts drove historic and pivotal turnout during the runoff elections, but their work began years – and for some more than a decade – before that.

Basic organization

Local black organizers and color organizers have been working for years to register and involve the traditionally under-represented Georgians in the political process, even when they have struggled to secure investment from donors and campaigns.

Best known among this cohort is Stacey Abrams, the former state legislature and gubernatorial candidate who founded the New Georgia Project voter registration group and later founded the electoral organization Fair Fight.

Many organizers credit her for bringing the vision of a battlefield in Georgia into the national political spotlight and providing high-level funds to step up voter mobilization efforts.

So much recognition for her,” said Helen Kim Ho, a longtime Abrams employee and former executive director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Atlanta, a non-partisan group Advocacy group Ho founded in 2010.

Ho said it was Abrams’ gubernatorial campaign in 2018 that first focused and “opened the political pegs” of the electoral power of the black, Latin American and Asian American communities in Georgia.

Bianca Keaton is the leader of the Democratic Party in Gwinnett County, a former conservative stronghold that is now an increasingly diverse majority and minority area, where Warnock and Ossoff have won by more than 20 points. She said she was laughed at by members of her committee when she tried to raise large sums of money for the county party two years ago.

“People didn’t have faith in what we were doing,” said Keaton. “But we stuck further away until we got what we needed. And as we all walked in faith together, we moved a mountain.”

These grassroots groups take an innovative approach to building political power, with an emphasis on relational and cultural organization while investing in digital infrastructure and technology.

“We start early. We work to build relationships in the communities that will eventually emerge,” said Nse Ufot, executive director of the New Georgia Project. “The work of the community organization, the work of the thematic organization, the work of overcoming years of oppression is not something that will only happen after Labor Day.”

The new Georgia project, which focuses on registering people of color and young people to vote, started in 2014. From October 2016 to October 2020, the number of black enrolled voters in Georgia rose by approximately 130,000, which equates to more than 25% of newly enrolled voters, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of state voter registration data. The number of registered voters in Latin America and Asia rose by more than 50% each, making up a rapidly growing proportion of Georgian voters.

According to Ufot, the New Georgia Project knocked on more than 2 million doors between November and January, along with more than 6.7 million phone calls and more than 4 million text messages.

Cliff Albright, co-founder of Black Voters Matter, said his group includes “music and culture, and dance and joy” in their campaigns. The Black Voters Matter Fund toured the state on what is known as the “Blackest Bus in America” ahead of the runoff elections, stopping in areas often overlooked by traditional rally political campaigns.

The Black Voters Matter Fund has local partners in 50 counties across Georgia who work with community groups such as churches, NAACP chapters, neighborhood associations, and historically black Greek letter organizations.

“Our message goes well beyond the elections,” said Albright. “We do this to build power over the long term.”

María Teresa Kumar, CEO of voter registration group Voto Latino, said that after the 2016 election, her organization invested in data scientists and technology to target potential voters on social media and digital space, and borrowed commercial marketing tactics to register people to vote . According to Kumar, Voto Latino has registered around 15% of all newly registered voters in Georgia since November.

“So many local organizations are doing the work that has already deprived people of their rights. That’s the model,” said Kumar.

Color community advocacy groups have also worked for years to tackle voter suppression and improve language accessibility. Groups such as Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Atlanta, the Asian American Advocacy Fund, the Latino Community Fund Georgia, and the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials have focused efforts including multilingual outreach and hotlines to protect voters in the language.

Organizers shared a common message: For Democrats and other political campaigns hoping to replicate the Georgia game book elsewhere in the South and the US, invest in local organization and leadership.

“For those who have the resources to give, find the local people who really do the work,” said Ho. “Give the money there. That’s the best way. It really is.”
