Two members of the far-right nationalist group, the Proud Boys, were tried in federal court Friday for conspiring to obstruct law enforcement and other charges related to their participation in the January 6th deadly riot at the Capitol.

Dominic Pezzola, 43, from Rochester, New York, and William Pepe, 31, from Beacon, New York, were initially prosecuted and arrested earlier this month, according to a press release from the US Department of Justice.

The men were charged with conspiracy, disorder, unlawful entry into buildings or properties, and disorderly and disruptive behavior in buildings or properties on Friday in federal court in DC.

Biotech company Novavax announced Thursday that its vaccine was more than 89% effective against the disease in its Phase 3 clinical trial conducted in the UK. And Johnson & Johnson added on Friday that its single-dose shot was 66% overall effective against Covid-19.

The introduction of two more vaccines could significantly strengthen the global arsenal of tools to fight the virus and end the pandemic. And although J & J’s vaccine appears to be significantly less effective than Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech’s at preventing disease, officials said it was still effective enough to prove useful, and the fact that only one shot is required is a clear advantage.

As more vaccines come into the fight, here are a few things you need to know to prepare for your shot:

1. Who can be vaccinated?

Pfizer’s vaccine was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in people aged 16 years and over, while Moderna’s vaccine was approved for people aged 18 years and over.

J & J’s vaccine has not yet been approved. The company is expected to file an application for emergency clearance with the US agency next week. The FDA review process is expected to take a few weeks, and the vaccine could be distributed in the US as early as next month.

Earlier this week, President Joe Biden announced plans to purchase an additional 200 million doses of the vaccines, including 100 million from Moderna and 100 million from Pfizer. That would bring the total supply of these two vaccines in the US to 600 million doses, but companies are still working to speed up production. Pfizer has announced it will ship 120 million doses and Moderna has promised 100 million by April.

3. Are the vaccines effective against new variants?

Manufacturers and the US government are investigating how effective the current vaccines are against new variants of the virus. One variant in particular, strain B.1.351, which is dominant in South Africa, gives health authorities cause for concern.

The global studies of the Novavax and J&J vaccines provide clues as to how these vaccines will fare against new strains. Novavax said its vaccine was only 49% effective in 44 Covid-19 cases in South Africa, with 90% of the cases linked to the problematic new variant. And J&J said his vaccine was 57% effective in the South African arm of his study.

Dr. Paul Offit, a member of the FDA’s Advisory Committee on Vaccines and Related Biological Products, told CNBC that the new strains weren’t a big problem yet, but it was important that drug manufacturers prepare for the possibility that the virus could mutate enough to to evade the protection of current vaccines.

Both Pfizer and Moderna have already announced that they are working on a booster shot for their vaccines that will better withstand strain B.1.351.

4. Are some shots better than others?

The first two vaccines approved in the US set a high standard for the others. Pfizer’s data showed that the vaccine was 94% effective at preventing the disease, while Moderna was 95% effective.

J&J said its vaccine was 72% effective at preventing the disease in the United States, but added that it was 85% effective at preventing people with Covid-19 from getting seriously ill. White House Health Advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci, later on Friday, noted that the main finding from the J&J vaccine data is that the single shot can keep people out of hospitals and prevent serious illness.

Dr. Jay Butler, CDC deputy director on infectious diseases, said Friday that current modeling suggests that 70% to 75% of people would need to be vaccinated in order for the population to achieve herd immunity. While Johnson & Johnson’s clinical data suggest the vaccine is less effective against virus variants such as the one native to South Africa, Gottlieb stressed that it was expected that mutations could be problematic for the vaccines.

In fact, Novavax announced Thursday that its vaccine was more than 89% effective against Covid-19 in a Phase 3 study conducted in the UK. However, in the company’s Phase 2 study in South Africa, the vaccine had a lower 49.4% effectiveness rate. In 90% of the cases it is the problematic new variant.

“I think the good news is that they are still effective against these variants – 50%, 60% effectiveness is pretty good,” Gottlieb said, noting that the FDA stated in July that any Covid vaccine it did Proven safe and secure, giving an emergency permit at least 50% effective.

For comparison, the seasonal flu vaccine generally reduces a person’s risk of developing influenza by 40% to 60% compared to people who don’t receive the shot, according to the CDC.

Finally, Gottlieb said the Covid vaccines need to be updated to better protect against new mutations and develop booster vaccinations. “We have time for that,” he said.

“In the meantime, these vaccines will still be effective against these new variants,” he said. “You are still a backlash against the spread of these variants in the United States, and we just have to get people vaccinated.”

By June there will probably be sufficient Covid vaccines for the “complete grownup US inhabitants,” says the physician

Dr. Johnson & Johnson board member Mark McClellan told CNBC Friday that there could be enough vaccinations for the entire US adult population by the summer.

“Assuming that accurate verification of the J&J data is no longer possible, we will have the capacity between Moderna, Pfizer and J&J to have enough vaccines available for the entire US adult population by June “said McClellan, a former FDA commissioner, said on” The News with Shepard Smith. ”

The US plans to buy 200 million doses of Covid vaccine from Moderna and Pfizer. The Department of Health and Human Services will increase its vaccine supply to states from 8.6 million to at least 10 million doses per week. To date, states have received more than 49 million doses, but only about half of those actually landed in people’s arms, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The agency reports that the US fires just over a million shots every day.

McClellan that the US should significantly increase the number of shots given per day and “should bring our ability to vaccinate closer to 3 million doses per day.”

The US has ordered 100 million doses of the J&J vaccine, which the company plans to deliver by June. J&J plans to apply for an emergency permit next week. If J & J’s vaccine is FDA approved, it will be the third emergency approved vaccine in the U.S. Pfizer’s vaccine was approved by the FDA on December 11th, and Moderna’s was approved a week later.

The efficacy numbers for J&J vaccines were lower than for Pfizer and Moderna. Pfizer’s vaccine was found to be 95% effective against Covid-19, while Moderna’s vaccine was about 94% effective. J & J’s vaccine was found to be 66% overall effective in preventing moderate to severe Covid.

Host Shepard Smith asked McClellan about the lower efficacy numbers compared to Pfizer and Moderna, explaining to Smith, “We are fighting a different virus today than three months ago when previous studies were done.”

In addition, J&J conducted its test on three continents, and the level of protection varied depending on the region. The vaccine showed an overall effectiveness of 72% in the US and 66% in Latin America. In South Africa, where the dangerous B.1.351 strain of Covid caused spikes in some cases, the J&J vaccine showed 57% effectiveness.

“Unfortunately, in three months’ time, we’ll likely be fighting another virus. The most important thing to winning this fight is getting as many people as possible vaccinated,” said McClellan. “The faster we shoot in the arms, the more people will be vaccinated here in this country and around the world, the better we can contain this further spread and further damage from Covid.”
