John Carreyrou predicts the end result of Elizabeth Holmes’ research

The writer of “Bad Blood” has not finished telling the Theranos story.

Three years after his bestseller was published, John Carreyrou is releasing a new podcast to uncover the final chapter of former Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes. “Bad Blood: The Final Chapter” follows the upcoming trial against Holmes.

In an interview with CNBC, Carreyrou shared his bold predictions about her criminal fraud trial due to begin in August after several delays due to the coronavirus pandemic and her unexpected pregnancy. Despite the postponements, Carreyrou predicts Holmes will be convicted of wire fraud and said a guilty verdict in her trial will be a “big shot across the bow for Silicon Valley entrepreneurs”.

“The message will be that you can’t really do what you want, you can’t completely ignore rules and regulations. You can’t shake your nose at regulators and authorities,” Carreyrou said.

He warns that a not guilty verdict will set a dangerous precedent among startup CEOs. “Young entrepreneurs will say, ‘Look what Elizabeth Holmes got away with and she didn’t go to jail for it.'” Carreyrou adds, “In this case, it takes a guilty verdict to correct course.”

Holmes and Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani ran the now defunct start-up Theranos together as CEO and President – and at times also as girlfriend and boyfriend.

The two are facing separate criminal jury trials over allegations they lied to patients and doctors while pushing investors for hundreds of millions of dollars. Holmes and Balwani have both pleaded not guilty.

Carreyrou tells CNBC that a large part of Holmes’ defense strategy could be blaming Balwani. He predicts that Holmes will take a stand and tell the jury that Balwani “kept her in his psychological grip, that he was an abusive friend”.

CNBC reached out to Holmes and Balwani attorneys. They did not respond to calls for comment.

Holmes plans to call a psychologist who specializes in relationship trauma as a witness. Carreyrou, who has spent years reporting on Holmes and the events in Theranos, says he is not buying the defense.

“Based on all of the interviews I did for my book and other interviews I did for the podcast, it’s clear that they ran this company and allegedly committed this fraud together as a couple,” he said.

“If they couldn’t agree, she had the last word,” said Carreyrou. “That’s why I find it hard to believe that she was under his psychological grip and had no will of her own.”

Biden presses Putin to disrupt cybercriminals in Russia

U.S. President Joe Biden speaks before signing an executive order in the State Dining Room of the White House in Washington, D.C., U.S., on Friday, July 9, 2021.

WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden pressed Russian President Vladimir Putin in a phone call Friday morning to take action to stem recent ransomware attacks from Russia-based groups.

“I made it very clear to [Putin] that the United States expects, when a ransomware operation is coming from their soil even though it’s not, not, sponsored by the state, that we expect them to act if we give them enough information to act on who that is,” Biden said Friday afternoon at the White House.

Asked by a reporter whether there would be “consequences” for such attacks, Biden replied, “Yes.”

The U.S. and Russia, the president said, have established a “means of communications now, on a regular basis, to be able to communicate with one another when each of us thinks something’s happening in another country that affects the home country.”

Overall, the call “went well, I’m optimistic,” said Biden.

The conversation came just days after a massive new cyberattack by the group REvil, believed to be based in Russia.

The hacker gang is demanding $70 million in cryptocurrency to unlock data from the attack, which spread to hundreds of small and medium-sized businesses across a dozen countries.

A senior administration official said Friday that the United States will “take action” to respond to the attack.

“We’re not going to telegraph what those actions will be, precisely. Some will be manifest and visible, some of them may not be, but we expect those to take place in the days and weeks ahead,” said the official, who requested anonymity in order to discuss sensitive negotiations.

The official spoke just moments after Biden, boarding Air Force One en route to Delaware, was asked whether it makes sense for the United States to attack the actual servers from which ransomware attacks originate. Biden replied, “Yes.”

The latest REvil attack is part of a string of serious ransomware attacks that have been carried out this spring and summer by groups originating in Russia.

In May, REvil targeted JBS, the world’s largest meat supplier. The company ultimately paid $11 million in ransom, but not before it briefly shut down its entire U.S. operation.

Earlier that same month, a different cyber criminal group targeted the operator of the nation’s largest gas pipeline, Colonial Pipeline. The attack forced the company to shut down approximately 5,500 miles of pipeline, leading to a disruption of nearly half of the East Coast’s fuel supply.

As of early Friday afternoon, the Kremlin had not yet released its own readout of the Biden-Putin call, so it’s unclear exactly how the Russian president responded to Biden’s pressure.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters Friday that the United States had no new information to suggest that the Russian government was directly responsible for the attacks.

Putin has consistently denied any involvement or direct knowledge of ransomware attacks originating in Russia.

But U.S. officials say the idea that Putin is unaware of who these attackers are isn’t credible, given the tight grip he maintains over Russia’s intelligence services and its murkier, off-the-books network of contractors.

In June, Biden met with Putin in person in Geneva, where he warned the Russian president to crack down on cyberattacks originating in Russia.

There, Biden said he presented Putin with a list of critical infrastructure in the United States that, were it to be attacked by Russian based cyber criminals, would constitute a serious national security threat to the U.S.

“Certain critical infrastructures should be off-limits to attack, period, by cyber or any other means,” said Biden following the meeting. “I gave them a list, 16 specific entities defined as critical infrastructure under U.S. policy, from the energy sector to water systems.”

“So we agreed to task experts in both our countries to work on specific understandings about what’s off-limits and to follow up on specific cases that originate in other countries and in either of our countries,” he said.

By identifying critical infrastructure as off-limits, Biden was also drawing a circle around targets that, should they be attacked by state or nonstate actors, would likely merit a governmental response.

The White House has so far declined to detail what retaliatory action the United States is taking or has taken against the cyber criminals themselves in several recent attacks, citing the need for such information to remain classified.

During the call Friday, Putin and Biden also commended each other for the joint work their teams undertook following the meeting in Geneva, the White House said.

That work led to an important U.N. Security Council vote Friday to resume the delivery of humanitarian aid into Syria.

No proof a booster shot is required, says Dr. Ashish Jha

There’s no need for Covid booster doses right now, the dean of Brown University’s School of Public Health said Friday, as highly transmissible, new variants test the protections of the available vaccines.

“Let me tell you where we are: the data is very clear, if you’ve gotten your two shots of Moderna  or Pfizer  or single shot of J&J, you have a very high level of protection against all variants, including delta,” said Dr. Ashish Jha. “I have not seen any evidence, so far, that anybody needs a third shot.”

Jha’s comments come after Pfizer and BioNTech announced Thursday that they are developing a Covid-19 booster shot intended to target the delta variant. Company officials say another shot may be needed because immunity from the vaccine appears to wane over time.

On CNBC’s “The News with Shepard Smith,” Jha underscored the importance of waiting for the data when it comes to a booster shot.

“If that evidence emerges, and obviously we’re going to want to take that into consideration, in my mind, I think there’s little likelihood that we’re going to need third shots for most people,” Jha said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration issued a joint statement that said Americans who are fully vaccinated do not need a booster shot.

“Americans who have been fully vaccinated do not need a booster shot at this time. FDA, CDC, and [the National Institutes of Health] are engaged in a science-based, rigorous process to consider whether or when a booster might be necessary,” read a joint statement released Thursday evening.

Why the solid of the brand new Gossip Woman seems so acquainted

That’s right now … there’s a fabulous new cast of Gossip Girl to dominate television.

On Thursday, July 8th, the much-anticipated reboot kicked off on HBO Max and launched its stars –Emily Alyn Lind, Eli Brown, Whitney Peak, Thomas Doherty, Jordan Alexander, Evan Mock, Zion Moreno, Savannah Smith and Tavi Gevinson– in nocturnal sensations. However, some viewers may not realize that some of the cast members are not new to the industry.

For starters, you’ll never guess which starlet played the younger version of Emily VanCamp‘s character on Revenge. (Tip: She’s one of the blonde stars in the cast.) Oh, and we can’t forget to mention that a handsome actor graduated from Disney Channel to take part in this captivating revival.

And while one member of the cast is new to TV, they’re well known in the model and skate industries. And then of course there is an actress who is no stranger to blockbuster films and critically acclaimed TV shows.

Fascinated? Well, that’s a secret we’ll never tell – just kidding.

15 extra our bodies recovered, demise toll rises to 79

Search and Rescue teams look for possible survivors and to recover remains in the collapsed 12-story Champlain Towers South condo building on July 07, 2021 in Surfside, Florida. Officials say the death toll climbed to 36 today, with 109 still unaccounted for.

Search teams have recovered 15 more bodies from the rubble of the collapsed condominium building in Surfside, Florida, bringing the death toll to at least 79 people as of Friday afternoon, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said during a press conference.

Levine Cava said 61 people are still unaccounted for and detectives are working to verify that each individual listed as missing was actually in Champlain Towers South when it collapsed over two weeks ago.

“In the midst of this terrible tragedy, and we’re so grateful, very grateful to all of those across our community and the world who continue to keep us in your prayers, and in your hearts,” Levine Cava said.

The painstaking search shifted from a rescue effort to a recovery operation on Wednesday after authorities decided that there was little hope of finding people alive in the rubble. But authorities vowed to continue the search for victims until they have cleared all the debris at the site, according to Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett.

Burkett commended search teams for their work, noting that the pile of debris that was initially four to five stories high is now near ground level.

The National Institute of Technology, or NIST, is making “very significant progress” with its investigation into the cause of the collapse, Levine Cava added. NIST teams have collected over 200 pieces of evidence, which have been sent to a physics measurement lab in Washington to assist with analysis. NIST is also using drones and lidar scanners, tools that measure the distance of an object on the Earth’s surface using light, in the probe.

Levine Cava said Thursday that the public also has “a very important role to play in this investigation.” She urged the public to submit any photos or videos related to the collapse to NIST’s website.

Champlain Towers North, the identical sister property of the collapsed condominium building, is also being evaluated, Burkett said. Engineers and authorities are using ground-penetrating radar and are taking samples of concrete to determine the structure’s salt content and strength.

Meanwhile, alternative housing arrangements have been made for residents of the sister property who wanted to evacuate.

The exact cause of the collapse of Champlain Towers South remains unknown.

Recent evidence points to structural flaws in the building far before the collapse, such as a 2018 report that reveals the 40-year-old building had waterproofing issues beneath the pool and cracking in the underground parking garage.

Experts have also said that the repeal in 2010 of a Florida law that required condominium buildings to plan for repairs may have contributed to the collapse.

Several resources are being provided to families and individuals affected by the collapse. The Family Assistance Center continues to offer mental health counseling as well as financial and housing assistance, among other critical services.

Authorities announced Thursday that nearly 200 families have been served by the center.

Levine Cava also said Thursday that rescue teams are collecting and cataloguing personal items found in the rubble of the condominium building, such as photos, technology devices, documents and jewelry. Authorities are developing a process for families and survivors to reclaim missing belongings that have been found.

The ultimate NHL Stanley Cup sport on NBC drew 3.6 million viewers

The final numbers are in, and the National Hockey League has attracted 3.6 million viewers for Game 5 of its Stanley Cup final on NBC, the league’s final season on the network.

On Wednesday, the Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the Montreal Canadiens 1-0 to repeat themselves as Stanley Cup champions. As with professional basketball, the main NHL event is off schedule due to the pandemic. But when compared to the 2020 Stanley Cup, which was held last September, attendance numbers have rebounded.

This series had an average of 2.52 million viewers. The 2020 series starring the Lightning and Dallas stars averaged around 2 million viewers in six games. In the 2019 Stanley Cup Final, the Boston Bruins – one of the “original six” hockey clubs of the NHL – and St. Louis Blues competed and averaged 5.3 million viewers in seven games.

The first four games of the 2021 series averaged total audience delivery – linear, cable and streaming combined – of 2.23 million viewers on the NBC broadcast network and sports channel NBCSN.

The NHL ended its 16-year relationship with NBC that year and moved to ESPN and WarnerMedia. The league increased its media rights fee to more than $ 625 million a year thanks to the new agreements. ESPN and TNT will split the upcoming Stanley Cup broadcasts.

Tampa Bay Lightning’s Pat Maroon # 14 lifts the Stanley Cup after beating the Montreal Canadiens 1-0 in the fifth game of the 2021 Stanley Cup Final, four-to-one against the Montreal Canadiens at the Amalie Arenaie in Tampa on July 7, 2021 , Florida.

A new way of activation

But before NBC Sports finalized its coverage, Lightning left winger Patrick Maroon signed a personal business deal.

Maroon became the first NHL player to activate a marketing agreement after Lightning won the series. During an on-ice interview with NBC, he mentioned Shavelogic and triggered their deal. The company makes shaving products and signed a six-digit stock option and ambassadorial agreement with Maroon. The agreement was negotiated by NHL agent Rob Grant of Octagon’s hockey division.

Shavelogic also signed a deal with the NHL in May and is now allowed to use the league’s intellectual property and showcase its brand at future Stanley Cup events.

The 33-year-old Maroon finished the regular NHL season with 18 points (14 goals and four assists) in 55 games. His contract, valued at $ 1 million, runs for another year. According to Spotrac, Maroon made $ 15 million in his career.

Breonna Taylor’s Household Information Lawsuit In opposition to Louisville Metro Police Dept

Breonna Taylor

Say her name! The fight for justice for Breonna Taylor is far from over. Since her untimely death last March, when she was fatally shot while sleeping by former Louisville Metro Police (LMPD), her family, along with activists, have been applying pressure to receive justice. Breonna’s family is once again taking legal action against the department after they allege that the police are withholding vital footage that shows the incident that caused her death, according to The Daily Mail.

The Taylor family allege that police may have lied about the existence of body camera footage which captured the moment Breonna was fatally shot in a botched drug raid that happened at her boyfriend Kenneth Walker’s home. On Thursday, Attorney Sam Aguiar filed the lawsuit claiming that the officers at the scene of Breonna’s death were all issued body cameras, although the department says none had them turned on.

As we previously reported last September, new body cam footage was released regarding the aftermath of Breonna’s death. The footage shows that multiple police officers did not follow several department policies following her death. In addition, the crime scene was reportedly compromised. Reports stated that footage was captured by 45 different body cameras and included in the investigative file compiled by the LMPD’s Public Integrity Unit. This was also shared with Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron.

Attorney Aguiar has represented the Taylor family in the past and was victorious in winning the previous suit against the LMPD. The Taylor family sued them in a wrongful death settlement and received a $12 million settlement. Roommates, as of now, we will continue to keep y’all updated as new updates occur.

Subsequent week units the tone for the whole profitable season

CNBC’s Jim Cramer looked ahead to the start of the reporting season on Friday, focusing on quarterly reports from major banks and other companies in the food and travel industries.

The Mad Money host’s outlook came after Wall Street stocks rallied sharply to rebound from Thursday’s big sell-off, which helped big averages end the week higher.

“What happens next week will shape the entire winning season,” said Cramer. “If we can get some good ones, we’ll be in party mode, but a negative series of numbers from the banks and some worrying Covid stats could make for a tough season of earnings.”

Sales and earnings per share forecasts are based on FactSet estimates:

“PepsiCo [will give] big numbers for us, but they also need to talk about how raw costs continue to rise, especially freight. JP Morgan should give us great numbers too, but they need to talk about trading and lending aren’t as strong as they should be, “Cramer said.

“I think both stocks are too high right now, given these two negatives,” he continued. “I would refrain from buying them before the receipts unless we get a significant withdrawal on Monday.”

  • Expected sales: $ 2.64 billion

“They gave us a fantastic quarter last time, but now it looks like a lot of the cyclical stocks have peaked,” he said. “This is particularly important because aluminum goes into everything and the rising costs have been a major stumbling block for gross margins for many aluminum buyers.”

Mississippi well being officers are asking aged folks to keep away from indoor mass gatherings because the Delta-Covid variant rips throughout the state

Spencer Platt | Getty Images

Mississippi state health officials issued new guidelines Friday urging state residents over 65 and immunocompromised residents, vaccinated or unvaccinated, to avoid indoor mass gatherings for the next two weeks “significant transfer” of the Delta variant in the coming weeks.

The new policy is valid until July 26th and is not mandatory. Instead, the guidelines should be viewed as a recommendation.

“We do not recommend mandates. What we do is provide personal recommendations to people who are at high risk of serious consequences, ”said Dr. Mississippi State Health Commissioner Thomas Dobbs during a news conference Friday. “We don’t want anyone to die unnecessarily.”

Dobbs said he currently “doesn’t expect” the guidelines to be extended to other age groups in the future.

Officials said they are starting to see significant transmission of the Delta variant, very reminiscent of what was seen in the early days of the pandemic. Mississippi state health epidemiologist Dr. Paul Byers, highlighted church groups, school and summer programs, funeral meetings and workplaces, and long-term care facilities as areas where officials are already seeing spikes in infection.

“We saw right away that they were the result of the Delta variant, and the broadcast … was pretty significant,” Byers said at the news conference on Friday.

The state is second to last of all states after Alabama when it comes to the percentage of the population who are fully vaccinated with two doses. About 25% of Mississippi population aged 65 and over are still unvaccinated and make up the majority of Covid deaths in the state. State health officials also said they are also seeing deaths in vaccinated residents “because we keep exposing them,” Dobbs said, although the percentage is tiny.

The graph shows cases, hospital admissions, and deaths of vaccinated and unvaccinated people in Mississippi from June 3 to July 1, 2021.

Mississippi State Department of Health

Mississippi ranks last in the country for the percentage of adults with at least one Covid vaccination, and the state also ranks last in the country for the percentage of residents 12 years and older with at least one vaccination.

“I don’t think we’re going to have a miraculous spike in our vaccination rate in the next few weeks, so people are going to die unnecessarily,” warned Dobbs.

State health officials asked vaccinated residents to speak to others about their experiences with the vaccine in order to raise awareness of the safety and effectiveness of the vaccinations.

“Let people know, let your family know, let your neighbors know, let your friends know,” Dobbs said. “There is no stronger message than trust and trust to let people know how widespread the vaccine is and understand that people are safe and happy to be protected.”

“Black Widow” grossed $ 13.2 million in field workplace on Thursday

Scarlett Johansson plays Natasha Romanoff, AKA Black Widow, in Marvel’s “Black Widow”.

Disney | wonder

“Black Widow” sold $ 13.2 million in preview tickets Thursday, raising the box office bar of the pandemic era.

The Marvel movie is expected to gross between $ 80 million and $ 110 million in box office revenue this weekend.

Universal’s “F9” grossed $ 7.1 million in its Thursday previews last month and $ 70 million on its debut weekend. Both were records for a film released in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The revenue for “Black Widow” on Thursday is equal to the $ 15.4 million raised from “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and the $ 14.5 million raised from “Thor: Ragnarok” . Both films were released in 2017. “Spider-Man” grossed $ 117 million on its three-day opening weekend and “Thor: Ragnarok,” according to Comscore, $ 123 million.

The strong preview numbers – coupled with pre-sales of tickets that keep pace with several Marvel films released before the pandemic – suggest fans will see this feature hit the big screen, despite it being available at Disney + for US $ 30 Dollar is available.

“This is the weekend Marvel fans have been waiting for, and their enthusiasm is reflected in Thursday’s preview figures, which point to what may well be the best pandemic-era opening weekend for Black Widow,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore. “Despite its availability on Disney +, ‘Black Widow’ is undeniably a big screen event and once again proves the essence of the cinematic experience.”

The number of cinemas open to the public is still below the level of 2019. Before the weekend, around 81% of the cinemas will sell tickets, reports Comscore.

Regardless, Black Widow is headed for the biggest opening of the pandemic, and the industry is likely to see the highest total weekend box office gross since March 2020. This will be a massive step up from the $ 901,000 domestic box office made during the same weekend last year.
