Frankie Scerbo

Sarah Harris

Vice President of Product bei XOKind

Why Lizzo Title-Dropped Drake in Her Track “Rumors”

She displayed a screenshot of the emojis she sent, which included a gust of wind, a person playing basketball and a basketball ball, which fans theorized was her saying she was “shooting her shot.”

Lizzo captioned the TikTok, “Don’t drink and DM, kids…. for legal porpoises this is a joke.”

The best part? Chris responded and followed Lizzo back. The rapper shared an update video with the new development, including a message from Chris saying, “No shame in a drunk DM,” he wrote. “God knows I’ve done worse on this app lol.”

And it didn’t stop there. Right before “Rumors” came out, Lizzo had another announcement concerning Chris: that he was the father to their fake baby.

“This is something that I’ve been really trying to keep personal and private just between me and the father of my child,” she said in another TikTok. “But since we’re airing out all the rumors today, I’ve been sucking in. We’re going to have a little America.”

The Avengers actor replied, “Hi! Just heard about our little bundle of joy,” he said. “My mother will be so happy lol.” He added that he wanted no “gender reveal parties,” which was likely a good call considering they have been controversial online.

Lizzo then joked that she “secured the child support bag.”

“Free Man” hits $ 28 million on the field workplace, Disney Eyes sequel

Jodie Comer and Ryan Reynolds star in “Free Guy” at 20th Century Studios.

Disney

Walt Disney’s “Free Guy” grossed more than $ 28 million at the box office on the opening weekend, exceeding expectations.

The 20th Century Studio film starring Ryan Reynolds was expected to gross between $ 15 million and $ 20 million in the first three days. With 22.5 million US dollars from international ticket sales, the film secured around 51 million US dollars worldwide.

Positive word of mouth resulted in “Free Guy” seeing a 24% increase in ticket sales between Friday and Saturday, the most of any tent poles released that summer. The performance of the film appears to have pleased Disney, which Reynolds said is reportedly interested in a sequel.

“[And] to [three] Years as the original IP film, Disney today confirmed that they officially want a sequel, “the actor wrote on Twitter on Friday.

Disney officials did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.

Box office analysts were eagerly watching the release of “Free Guy” as its theatrical-only release and original concept would be a barometer of the strength of the cinema industry.

Most of the high profile films that only hit theaters – like Universal’s “F9” and Paramount’s “A Quiet Place Part II” – are part of established film franchises and give them a ready-made fan base.

Likewise, with hybrid releases such as Warner Bros. ‘”The Suicide Squad”, it was difficult to determine if the pandemic had affected ticket sales or if the film could be streamed at home.

“Free Guy emerged victorious in the latest box office stress test for the release model,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore.

Dergarabedian said around 86% of theaters were open compared to 2019, the highest value in a weekend since March 2020.

“The film provides even more evidence that even in this challenging market, cinema exclusivity pays off not just on the opening weekend but over the long term,” he said.

Disclosure: Comcast is the parent company of NBCUniversal and CNBC. NBCUniversal distributed “F9”.

Federal choose denies landlords’ request to dam CDC nationwide eviction ban

New York City housing advocates and tenants march to demand Gov. Andrew Cuomo cancel rent amid the pandemic on Oct. 10, 2020.

A federal judge rejected on Friday a request by landlord groups to block the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s new eviction moratorium.

The decision by Judge Dabney Friedrich of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia is a win for the Biden administration.

More than 11 million Americans remain behind on their rent, moving the CDC to issue a new eviction ban earlier this month after its previous one expired on July 31. That protection applies until Oct. 3 and to places where Covid rates remain high.

The ruling was on technical grounds. Friedrich said the “Court’s hands are tied,” by an earlier appellate ruling to keep the moratorium in effect. She said the plaintiffs could challenge the policy with the D.C. Circuit.

Alabama landlords who made the request will probably appeal.

“The Administration believes that CDC’s new moratorium is a proper use of its lawful authority to protect the public health,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement on Friday. “We are pleased that the district court left the moratorium in place, though we are aware that further proceedings in this case are likely.”

The CDC’s eviction ban has faced numerous legal challenges and landlords have criticized it, saying they can’t afford to house people for free or shoulder the country’s massive rental arrears. On Thursday, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down at least part of New York’s eviction moratorium.

Housing advocates say evictions must be barred until states distribute the $45 billion in rental assistance allocated by Congress. Just around $4.2 billion of that money has reached households, according to a recent analysis by the National Low Income Housing Coalition.

“It’s imperative that cities and states deliver the rental assistance to at risk communities as quickly as possible to prevent eviction and the consequences for public health across all of our communities,” said Emily Benfer, a visiting professor of law at Wake Forest University.

Democrats wish to develop Medicare. Listed below are the gaps in protection it is best to learn about

Hero pictures | Getty Images

You may know that you are eligible for Medicare by the age of 65. What surprises a lot of people, experts say, is the cost.

While Democratic MPs in Congress are looking to expand the health insurance program to include dental, visual, and hearing impairments as part of their $ 3.5 trillion budget, these are not the only things Medicare is ruling out. And costs are factored in, even if you are insured for a service, procedure, or other medical need.

“Most customers think Medicare is free and fret because they’ve worked and paid into the system their entire lives,” said Elizabeth Gavino, Lewin & Gavino founder and independent broker and general agent for Medicare plans .

These summer activities can have an impact on your tax situation

“That [surcharges] are even more surprising to high earners, “Gavino said, referring to the additional premium amounts that beneficiaries in higher tax brackets pay for certain portions of their Medicare coverage (more on this below).

Some lower-income beneficiaries can benefit from programs that reduce their Medicare costs. However, for those who don’t qualify, you can pay out of pocket or purchase additional insurance.

Here are the common costs you should know in order to prepare yourself.

The basics

Basic or original Medicare consists of Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (outpatient care). You will be given a so-called registration deadline for registration, which begins three months before your 65th birthday and ends three months later (a total of seven months).

“Start your research six months early, at least six months before your 65th birthday,” said Danielle Roberts, co-founder of insurance company Boomer Benefits.

The general rule is that if you enroll after your initial enrollment deadline you will face a late enrollment penalty unless you otherwise have qualified insurance – e.g. B. by a large employer. This corresponds to a 10% higher monthly basic premium for part B for every 12-month period that you should have enrolled but weren’t. And these sentences are lifelong.

Part D is prescription drug insurance coverage. And while it’s optional, it also comes with late enrollment penalties for failing to enroll when you could.

This fee is typically 1% for each month that you could have enrolled but opted not to (unless you otherwise have qualifying insurance). You would pay this fine as long as you have Part D coverage.

Meanwhile, around 40% of beneficiaries choose to get their Part A and Part B benefits through Advantage plans (Part C) offered by private insurers.

Most Advantage plans also include Part D and extras such as limited teeth or eyesight, or gym memberships. They usually come with their own co-payments and deductibles, which can be different from the basic Medicare. However, they offer maximum values out of the pocket that the original Medicare does not offer.

Her entire working life has had an out-of-pocket coverage limit and Medicare does not.

Danielle Roberts

Co-founder of the insurance company Boomer Benefits

That surprises a lot of people, said Roberts.

“All of her working life, her coverage has had an out-of-pocket limit and Medicare hasn’t,” she said.

The remaining beneficiaries stick with the Medicare base, often combining it with a standalone Part D plan. In this situation, the option to mitigate your expenses is a Medigap policy, unless you have some other type of coverage (such as employer-sponsored insurance or additional coverage from Medicaid).

These supplementary policies, sold by private insurers, cover some aspects of Part A and Part B co-payment, in whole or in part, including co-payments and co-insurance. They also limit what you pay out of pocket each year.

The costs

As long as you have paid into the system for at least 10 years, there is no reward for Part A.

Assuming you don’t have additional insurance like Medigap or an Advantage plan (which may have different hospital contributions), Part A includes a 2021 deductible of $ 1,484.

This amount covers the first 60 days of each service period. In addition, daily co-payments of $ 371 apply up to the 90th day. Anything above it falls from the “Lifetime Reserve” days at a daily rate of $ 742.

The standard monthly premium for Part B is USD 148.50 for 2021, although beneficiaries with higher incomes pay more (see chart). There is also a $ 203 deductible. Once you meet this, you will typically pay 20% of the benefits covered.

Zoom In Icon Arrows pointing outwards

Benefit plans may or may not have a premium in addition to what you pay for Part B. In general, the following applies: the lower the premium, the higher the deductible and other co-payments.

For beneficiaries who want to combine basic Medicare with a Medigap plan instead, note that while a number of companies offer insurance, they can only offer policies from a list of around 10 standardized plans. Each is simply assigned a letter: A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M and N.

However, the premiums can vary widely. In a Dallas zip code, the lowest Plan G cost is $ 99 per month for a 65-year-old woman and the highest is $ 242 per month for the same consumer, according to the American Association for Medicare Supplement Insurance.

For prescription drug coverage: Higher income beneficiaries pay more for Part D, regardless of whether they receive these benefits through an Advantage Plan or a stand-alone plan (see table).

Zoom In Icon Arrows pointing outwards

For jet setters

If you are planning on traveling in retirement, be aware that Medicare basic care generally does not cover the care benefits you will receive outside of the United States.

When you choose an Advantage Plan, emergencies are often covered worldwide. However, routine care abroad cannot be.

There are some Medigap policies that provide some emergency coverage for overseas travel with a lifetime cap of $ 50,000.

You could also look at travel health guidelines specifically geared towards those 65 and over. Depending on the specifics of coverage and your age, these policies can cost around $ 170 or more per trip.

bits and pieces

Basic Medicare generally does not cover long-term care, which is essentially non-medical care: daily assistance with life activities such as bathing and eating. Not only does Medicare cover dental, visual, and hearing treatments, but it also doesn’t cover acupuncture, cosmetic surgery, or routine foot care in general.

FDA permits third dose for the immune-deficient

The Food and Drug Administration authorized Covid-19 vaccine booster shots for people with weakened immune systems, a highly anticipated move intended to shield some of the most vulnerable Americans from the highly contagious delta variant.

“Today’s action allows doctors to boost immunity in certain immunocompromised individuals who need extra protection from COVID-19,” acting FDA Commissioner Dr. Janet Woodcock said in a statement.

The agency said organ transplant recipients and people who are similarly immunocompromised can receive a third dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines. The FDA also emphasized that other fully vaccinated people are “adequately protected” and currently do not need an extra dose.

The FDA OK is not the final go-ahead. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s vaccine advisory committee has scheduled a meeting Friday to consider shots for immunocompromised Americans. If they issue a recommendation and it is approved by the CDC, third shots could begin immediately.

White House chief medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said last week that federal health officials were speeding regulatory efforts to clear third doses for such people, including cancer and HIV patients or those who have had organ transplants. He said new data suggested they don’t produce an adequate immune response after receiving two doses of a Covid vaccine.

“Immunocompromised individuals are vulnerable,” Fauci said Thursday. “It is extremely important for us to move to get those individuals their boosters, and we are now working on that, and we will make that be implemented as quickly as possible. … It is a very high priority.”

Such people represent only about 2.7% of the U.S. adult population but make up about 44% of hospitalized Covid breakthrough cases, which is when a fully vaccinated individual becomes infected, according to recent data from a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advisory group.

Studies suggest that a third vaccine shot might help patients whose immune systems don’t respond as well to a first or second dose.

Four small studies cited by the CDC last month showed that 16% to 80% of people with weakened immune systems didn’t have detectable antibodies to fight Covid after two shots. Among vaccinated patients who had no detectable antibody response, 33% to 50% developed an antibody response after receiving an additional dose, according to the CDC.

With delta surging in the U.S., doctors fear leaving such groups unprotected against the virus could lead to even more dangerous variants.

Fauci, speaking with “CBS This Morning” earlier Thursday, said it is “likely” everybody will eventually need to receive a booster dose. But the priority right now, he said, is to give boosters to people who have compromised immune systems.

Some doctors had long been pushing for the U.S. to allow immunosuppressed populations to get an extra dose, and many of them are already finding additional doses of the vaccines on their own, medical experts say.

A CDC advisory group met last month to consider whether fully vaccinated Americans with weakened immune systems need a booster dose after data showed they are less likely to have antibodies to fight the disease and more likely to suffer from a breakthrough infection.

“The hardest to vaccinate people are those who are immunosuppressed,” Dr. Dan Barouch, an immunologist at Harvard Medical School, said in late June. Data suggests at least a third of them respond well if they get a third dose, he added.

The FDA’s move comes after the World Health Organization urged wealthy nations last week to temporarily stop the distribution of booster shots, citing vaccine inequity across the globe. However, world health officials made sure to emphasize they were not referring to the extra doses that may be needed now for certain groups, like those with weakened immune systems.

Other countries, such as France, are already giving out third shots to people living with cancer or other immune impairments. Israel announced plans last month to offer booster shots to people over age 60, another high-risk population, as the shot’s effectiveness appears to wane in those individuals.

In the U.S., Mississippi, a state with some of the lowest vaccination rates, is advising that doctors consider a booster dose for people with weakened immune systems. Health officials there recommend waiting at least four weeks after full vaccination before receiving a booster.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

Taliban enter Afghanistan capital Kabul

WASHINGTON — Taliban fighters began entering the Afghan capital of Kabul on Sunday, the last city to have been thus far spared takeover by the militants amid their rapid sweep of the country in the wake of U.S. forces departing.

A Taliban spokesperson said the fighters intended to negotiate a “peaceful surrender” of the city.

“Until a peace agreement is agreed, the security of the city and its residents is the responsibility of the government and they should guarantee it,” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement.

Two U.S. defense officials confirmed to NBC News that the Taliban also seized Bagram Air Base, a development that comes less than two months after the U.S. military handed over the once-stalwart airbase to the Afghan National Security and Defense Force.

The group began emptying out Parwan prison there which has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 prisoners, including hardened Taliban and al Qaeda fighters, according to the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

In 2012, at its peak, Bagram saw more than 100,000 U.S. troops pass through. It was the largest U.S. military installation in Afghanistan.

Since President Joe Biden’s April decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan, the Taliban have made stunning battlefield advances with now nearly the entirety of the nation under their control.

The group previously captured the strategic city of Ghazni, which had brought their front line within 95 miles of Kabul, a staggering development that spurred the deployment of 5,000 American troops back into the country to help with evacuations.

Britain and Canada also rushed troops into Kabul to evacuate their embassies.

The State Department has issued repeated calls for U.S. citizens to leave Afghanistan immediately, warning that its ability to assist citizens is “extremely limited” due to deteriorating security conditions and reduced staffing.

Despite being vastly outnumbered by the Afghan military, which has long been assisted by U.S. and coalition forces, the Taliban seized Kandahar and Herat, Afghanistan’s second- and third-largest cities last week. The group also took the strategic town of Pul-e-Alam, a city that has one of the four main roads to Kabul.

The Pentagon has previously said that the continued Taliban offensive across the country runs against a commitment made last year by the group to engage in peace talks with the Afghan government.

The peace talks, which are hosted in Qatar, have since stalled.

“What we’re seeing on the ground is that the Taliban continues to advance and to assume control of district and provincial centers that clearly indicates that they believe it is possible to gain governance through force, through brutality, through violence, through oppression, which is at great odds with their previously stated goal of actually wanting to participate in a negotiated political solution,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters recently.

He added that while the Pentagon is concerned to see such advances by the Taliban, the Afghan military must now leverage the nearly two decades of training from U.S. and NATO coalition forces.

“They have the advantage in numbers, in operational structure, in air forces and in modern weaponry and it’s really about having the will and the leadership to use those advantages to their own benefit,” Kirby said.

“The recipe can’t be just a constant U.S. presence in Afghanistan that never ends,” he added.

Last week, Biden told reporters at the White House that he does not regret his decision to withdraw American troops from Afghanistan, despite shocking gains by the Taliban.

“Look, we spent over a trillion dollars over 20 years, we trained and equipped with modern equipment over 300,000 Afghan forces,” Biden said.

“Afghan leaders have to come together,” the president added. “They’ve got to fight for themselves, fight for their nation.”

Okay. Michelle addresses the most recent on-line evaluation of her efficiency – “Yeah, I do know I look totally different”

K. Michelle

Roommate, K. Michelle has been very open with her fans about her botched plastic surgery and painfully drawn-out process of reconstructive surgery – but now she’s clapping back on critics who keep coming for her looks. K. Michelle responded to recent online criticism on social media that her face looks completely different from what fans met her.

Newly released photos of K. Michelle hit social media earlier this month – and in no time she was a trending topic as many asked why she looked so different … and almost unrecognizable.

K. Michelle posted the following message on her Twitter account:

“Yeah, I know I look different. I look healthier than ever. I felt bad, some didn’t want me to get it back together. Ok now the lies about the face lift are getting old, I know it kills your soul, but God guided the doctor’s hands so he was in control.

Despite trying to quell rumors that her face was undergoing major cosmetic surgery, critics did not accept K. Michelle’s explanation and continued to urge her to make her actions clear – just as she did with the buttock implant removal, according to Reise.

There were rumors that she was returning to her reality TV roots with a new show that will trace her life after her removal surgery. However, nothing has been confirmed at the moment.

Check out the companies that make the headlines before the doorbell rings:

Walt Disney (DIS) – Walt Disney reported adjusted quarterly earnings of 80 cents per share, well above the consensus estimate of 55 cents, while also beating sales projections. Disney’s performance was boosted by a rebound in US theme park attendance and stronger than expected growth in its Disney + streaming service. However, the company warned of uncertainty about the effects of the delta coronavirus variant. Disney shares rose 5.5% before the IPO.

Airbnb (ABNB) – Airbnb lost 11 cents a share in the most recent quarter, less than the 47 cents loss analysts expected. Revenue beat estimates and nearly quadrupled year over year as domestic traffic rebounded from its pandemic lows. However, the company drew attention to the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic and the Delta variant, and Airbnb stock lost 2.8% in early trading.

23andMe (ME) – The genetic research company reported $ 59 million in revenue for the first quarter as a publicly traded company, up 23% year over year while posting a smaller loss. 23andMe’s shares rose 2.1% before it was marketed.

DoorDash (DASH) – DoorDash posted a quarterly loss of 30 cents per share, more than Wall Street forecast 20 cents. However, the sales of the food delivery service exceeded estimates, with gross order volume up 70% year over year. DoorDash has also raised its annual forecast for gross order volume. The DoorDash share lost 4.2% before the market.

SoFi (SOFI) – SoFi lost 48 cents per share in the second quarter, compared to analyst forecasts of 6 cents per share. The digital financial services company’s revenue beat estimates as its membership more than doubled year over year, but its stock fell 9.6% prior to launch.

Pfizer (PFE), BioNTech (BNTX), Moderna (MRNA) – The FDA has approved Covid-19 vaccine booster vaccinations for immunocompromised people using the Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna vaccines. Pfizer was up 0.2%, BioNTech was up 2.4% and Moderna was up 2.3%.

Embraer (ERJ) – The Brazilian jet maker posted its first recurring quarterly profit since the first quarter of 2018 as travel demand rebounded from the pandemic’s lowest levels. Before the IPO, the shares rose by 3.6%.

Kansas City Southern (KSU) – Kansas City Southern rejected an upgraded takeover offer from the Canadian Pacific Railway (CP), saying it did not constitute a “superior proposal” to their arrangement with the Canadian National Railway (CNI). The offer from Canadian Pacific is valued at $ 27 billion compared to $ 29 billion for Canadian National, but Canadian Pacific believes its offering has a better chance of regulatory approval.

ZipRecruiter (ZIP) – ZipRecruiter posted a quarterly loss of 55 cents per share, compared to a consensus estimate of 22 cents per share. However, the operator of the online job marketplace posted revenue well above Street’s forecasts and was optimistic about the remainder of 2021. ZipRecruiter rose 14.3% in the premarket.

Rocket Companies (RKT) – Rocket shares rose 5.4% pre-market, despite the online mortgage platform operator missing sales and profit margins. Rocket saw an increase in the volume of completed lending over a year ago and was optimistic about a number of metrics for the current quarter.

ContextLogic (WISH) – The e-commerce platform company’s stock plunged 27.8% in the premarket after losing revenue and earnings last quarter. The operator of wish.com said it sees declining demand for its products, fewer users and active buyers, and higher costs.

Activision Blizzard (ATVI) – The video game maker’s stock rose 1.1% in pre-trading hours after Citi upgraded it from “neutral” to “buy” and said the current risk / reward profile following the recent pullback the stock looks cheap.

Again-to-college spending on observe to extend—however later—splash

Jade Dedrick spent the past year holed up in her childhood bedroom taking college classes on video. She had a short back-to-school shopping list last fall: a five-subject notebook, colorful pens and a planner.

This week, the 20-year-old college senior returns to Howard University and her list is much longer. She wants to buy a beanbag chair, plants and artwork to help decorate her off-campus apartment. She needs cleaning supplies, a vacuum and food to stock the fridge.

She said she has not yet tackled all of that shopping — or added up how much those purchases may cost.

“I’m scared to ballpark it,” Dedrick said, with a laugh.

For many college students, the coronavirus pandemic has meant long days stuck in front of a computer or a deferred year away from school. This fall, a wave of young people will move into college dorms and campus apartments — or return after a year off — and will need the extra long sheets, shower totes, bulletin boards and other decor to match.

Yet some are putting off purchases, as they juggle a full summer schedule and weigh pandemic-related uncertainty.

College students and their families expect to spend an average of $1,200.32 — up about 13% from a year ago, according to the National Retail Federation’s annual back-to-school spending survey. Prosper Insights & Analytics polled 7,704 consumers from July 1 to 8 for the survey. College spending is expected to total $71 billion, up from $67.7 billion last year, according to the survey.

Most of that increase is coming from more spending on electronics and dorm furnishings, the survey found.

On average, back-to-school and college shoppers have completed only 51% of their shopping so far, according to a follow-up survey of 8,216 consumers that the trade group fielded from Aug. 2 to 8.

Joe Derochowski, home industry advisor for market researcher The NPD Group, said historically, retail sales reflect a college spending bump in June and July. However, he said, rather than shop, teens and their families seem more eager to socialize after months of being cooped up and finally getting Covid-19 vaccines.

“You finally get a chance to go see friends and family,” he said. “You finally get a chance to maybe have people over. There’s all these other needs that are up there that may have jumped ahead.”

Plus, he added, some students may want to wait to hear final details that may influence plans as colleges and universities continue to monitor the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 90% of U.S. counties are now seeing substantial or high transmission of the virus.

A big opportunity

Retailers are already trying to cash in on the opportunity, no matter when customers shop.

Kohl’s began marketing for back-to-dorm shopping early in the summer because the return to college seemed more certain this fall, said Greg Revelle, Kohl’s chief marketing officer. It also launched a new tool that allows college students to “build a bed” with throws, pillows, twin XL sheets that fit dorm mattresses and more. It also added desks to its private-label home goods line, The Big One.

Walmart and Target have also played up back-to-college merchandise at stores and online, such as furniture, laptops and home goods like throw pillows and faux succulents. Target has a college registry. It’s also partnered with Pinterest on a visual search tool for its app that let’s a shopper snap a picture of an item and find a similar one at Target.

Some retailers are also trying to draw attention to new brands or parts of their store. At Walmart, for instance, the company is trying to introduce younger consumers to its Gap Home brand and at Kohl’s, foot traffic for dorm shopping coincides with the opening of Sephora inside of some of its stores.

NPD’s Derochowski said college students are putting extra effort into decorating this year — a desire that’s reflected in retailers’ colorful kitchen appliances and variety of bed ensembles.

He said retailers have a long-term business reason to woo college shoppers. Much like a wedding registry, he said, brands can connect with consumers at a meaningful moment in their lives and build loyalty.

Adi Wineland, a senior at James Madison University, said he is still holding off on some major purchases like a meal plan and parking pass.

Postponed shopping

The pandemic and spread of the delta variant have complicated the return to campus, as colleges and universities have announced evolving requirements for the fall. This week, for example, Stanford University joined a growing list of schools that are requiring weekly Covid testing of students— regardless of their vaccination status. Other schools have announced vaccine mandates or updated their policy on masks.

Adi Wineland, a 21-year-old student at James Madison University, is among the shoppers who have wavered on when to check off items on his back-to-college list. On the one hand, he said many of his friends have sprung for big furniture purchases or signed leases for pricier apartments since they didn’t have those expenses last year.

At the same time, Wineland said, he feels a sense of uncertainty as he sees the rise of Covid-19 cases. He said he has bought some items that he would need for the return to the classroom: a larger backpack, notebooks and binders.

However, he said he has put off some of the bigger purchases. For instance, said he is not sure what kind of clothes to buy — new outfits for class or loungewear like T-shirts and shorts — since there’s a chance that some or all of his classes may pivot to virtual learning.

Wineland said he is also pushing off buying a meal plan and a campus parking pass, two expenses that may be unnecessary if he learns at home. He said he doesn’t want to sink money into those and not get a refund.

“I’m kind of taking a wait-and-see approach,” he said.

Bed Bath & Beyond CEO Mark Tritton chalked up the delay in shopping to families enjoying a “post-Covid lockdown moment, out there having fun and getting summer sun.” In an interview with CNBC’s “Closing Bell” earlier this month, he said its market research found the majority of customers are less than halfway done with their purchases.

He said the retailer expects dorm shopping to gain steam in the weeks ahead.

“Good things lie ahead in August and I think even extending into September,” he said.
