In the 245 years of American independence, only four presidents have been indicted. Amazingly, however, it happened to 2 or the last 5 people who held the highest office in the country.
Donald Trump has, of course, been charged twice. He would probably have been convicted a second time had it not been for the bipartisan nature of the day.
Bill Clinton was charged in the late 1990s. And while Clinton had had an embarrassing affair with an employee, the charges against him were nowhere near as serious as the ones Trump faced.
Former House Speaker John Boehner has released a new book in which he’s fairly honest about his actions as a Republican Party member. And in the new volume, Boehner says that the party should never have indicted Clinton.
Boehner writes: “I think the Republicans charged him for one reason and one reason – because it was strongly recommended to us by a Tom DeLay. Tom believed that the Clinton charge would get us all those seats in the House of Representatives, would be a huge win politically, and he convinced enough of the membership and the GOP base that it was true. I was on board at the time. I won’t pretend otherwise. But I regret it now. I regret that I did not fight against it. “
The former Ohio Rep. Also slams Trump into the new book. He writes about the 45th President: “I admit I wasn’t prepared for what came after the elections – Trump refused to accept the results and fueled the flames of conspiracy that raged on the seat of our democracy, the building I once presided over transformed. “
