Former director of the National Economic Council, Gene Sperling, will oversee the implementation of President Joe Biden’s $ 1.9 trillion coronavirus relief plan, the White House said Monday.

Sperling, who once headed the National Economic Council under former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, will take on a role similar to that of Biden when he was vice president in 2009 during the financial crisis.

Biden was responsible for initiating the Obama Recovery Act at the time.

According to a senior White House official, Sperling will work with the heads of the White House political councils and key federal officials to help them get the funds required by law as quickly as possible and maximize their impact.

The official told CNBC that the administration will be working with state and local governments in this effort, much like Biden implemented the Restoration Act over a decade ago.

Biden signed the coronavirus relief package on Thursday.

As reported by CNBC in February, Sperling has been replaced by Neera Tanden as the administration candidate to head the Office of Management and Budget.
