Donald Trump is the first U.S. president to be charged twice, and Hollywood broadly supports the historic move. Some even have jokes.
On Wednesday, January 13, a majority of 232 members of the House of Representatives, including 10 members of Trump’s Republican Party, voted to charge him with “inciting insurrection” after numerous of his supporters flooded the Capitol last week. The impeachment article also states that he “should be re-indicted, removed and excluded from public office”.
“I didn’t even know you could be tried twice,” he tweeted Chrissy Teigencelebrating with her husband on the streets of Los Angeles John Legend and thousands of other people after Trump lost the 2020 election Joe Biden last November. “I thought it was like dying.”
Five people were killed a week ago and lawmakers fearful for their lives tried to hide when pro-Trump mobs stormed the Capitol in an attempt to disrupt certification of the 2020 election results. Shortly before the riots, Trump gave a rousing speech to his supporters in which he repeated false claims that the election was fraudulent. He said, “I know that everyone here will soon be marching to the Capitol to peacefully and patriotically make their voices heard.” And added: “We fight like hell and if you don’t fight like hell, you are not going to have a country anymore.”
Hours after he was charged on Wednesday, Trump posted a video titled “I clearly condemn the violence we saw last week.”
“If impeachment isn’t enough, Damn his new crimes – indict him twice!” longtime vocal Trump critic Star Wars actor Mark Hamill tweeted. “# DarnOldDonald.”
