Manzano High senior Alysia Dow, who hails from Edgewood, got a couple of breaks in her climb to the girls' tennis semifinals of the Albuquerque Public Schools Singles Tournament at Jerry Cline Courts last week.
Playing at the No. 3 position, Dow won in the first round and quarterfinals, both by default, before she was eliminated in the semis. Sandia High's Holly Higgins, the eventual No. 3 winner, defeated the Monarch 6-2, 6-1. Two Manzano boys made it to the semifinals. They were Tram Tran at No. 5 and Jacob Reeves at No. 8. Other Monarchs players from the East Mountains included Tijeras' Issac Fox (boys No. 3), Cedar Crest's Anthony Heitzinger (boys No. 4), Tijeras' Elizabeth Detlefs (girls No. 5) and Sandia Park's Maddy Halpern (girls No. 6). Fox and Halpern advanced to the quarterfinals. Rebecca Schoeny and Brett Robertson represented Manzano at No. 1. Schoeny fell 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals to Eldorado's Susan Baklini. The Eagle wound up as the girls' runner-up. La Cueva's Gabby Otero was the girls' No. 1 champion, and Sean Baklini of EHS was the boys' victor in play at the top position. No team scores were recorded. In addition, the Monarchs girls hosted Del Norte and won their season-opening dual 7-2 against the Knights on March 9. "It's been a good season so far," said Ryan Maestas, Manzano's second-year girls coach. "But we've just got started. And we're younger this year. We have five seniors and four freshman on the team. There's more of a gap. Last year, we had six seniors and five juniors. The good thing is they all get along." The Manzano boys, on the road, beat DNHS 9-0 in their initial dual March 9. Moriarty tennis The Pintos boys and girls will open their 2009-10 season with a triangular at Santa Fe High against West Las Vegas and Raton on Saturday. Golf The Manzano boys were to have competed in the APS Invitational at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course on Monday, but their participation was canceled because of the weather, said Monarchs assistant coach Kevin Linker. The Moriarty girls were to have played in the APS invite Tuesday, but they were previously pulled out because they weren't quite ready, Pintos coach Tony Flores said. Manzano has no girls this year. East Mountain will begin its spring season at the Bernalillo tournament Monday. The Timberwolves will host their invitational March 29 at Paa-Ko Ridge Golf Course. |
