As far as days go, the first Tuesday in March doesn't mean that much to most people.
In New Mexico, however, the day marks municipal elections. Communities in the East Mountains and Estancia Valley will be choosing among candidates to represent them at the lowest level of elected government. It is also one of the most important levels of government. But turnout for municipal elections, at best, is disappointing, which itself is disappointing. Respect should be offered to anyone who runs for a municipal office. Serving as a mayor or council member comes with no pay and a large commitment of time. The people who run, no matter their intentions or qualifications, truly reflect the spirit of community. These are the men and women who are willing to put themselves in front of the people and say, "I think I can make a difference." The voters may not agree, of course. With any contested election, there is always a loser. In Edgewood, Moriarty, Estancia and Mountainair, voters will be deciding whether to elect new councilors or stick with the incumbents. Moriarty, Estancia and Mountainair voters could be picking new mayors. And in Edgewood, voters will decide whether they should tax themselves in a pair of bond issues. Who is elected could change the way these towns operate over the next four years. So it's important for residents to get out and vote Tuesday. The future of your town could depend on it. |
